Project start Initiative resulting from 9/11/2001 attacks US government plus 3 major Port operating companies P&O ports PSA Hutchison Port Holdings Strategic Council Security Technology
Project Goal Demonstrate the available technology to make containers “Secure” and “Smart”. Demonstrate Information Communication Technology to present information assuring the physical integrity of a container from origin to destination. Collect and provide cargo data and other required information to support appropriate investigation by authorities.
Smart & Secure Trade Lanes Phase 1 started in November 2002, shipping E-sealed containers between Hong Kong and Seattle. Followed in March 2003 by Rotterdam - New York and the Felixstowe – New York Tradelanes. In all, 600, containers were shipped with Electronic-seals during phase 1, ending in November 2003. Participants a.o.: Shippers: Target Stores, Xerox, BASF. Carriers a.o.: MOL, Hapag Lloyd.
