Consortial organizations CIBER- Coordinamento Interuniversitario Basi dati e Editoria in Rete (26 universities) Members are: CASPUR universities (9) + 17 Central-Southern Italian universities CILEA – Supercomputing Applications Consortia (11 members + various research institutions Members are: 11 universities from the Northwest of Italy. CILEA acts on behalf of these universities and the same time as a service provider to other Italian universities or research centres which have not joined either CIBER or CIPE CIPE – Coordinamento Italiano Periodici Elettronici (11 universities) It’s a consortium of universities mainly from Central and Northern East part of Italy. SBBL – Sistema biblioteche biomediche Lombardia a regional based consortia of medical schools and hospitals in Lombardy BIBLIOSAN – a national based consortia of medical research centres and hospital under the aegis of the ministry of Health

News from Italy National negotiations : Elsevier, Springer and Portico under the aegis of CARE – Coordinamento Acquisto Risorse Elettroniche –promoted by CRUI – Council of the Rectors of Italian Universities (Next step: Wiley Blackwell negotiations) CIPE became officially a consortium in 2007 CIBER became officially a body of CASPUR in February 2008 Authorization & Authentication Infrastructure (AAI) – Pilot Project IDEM (Italian Federation- partners: GARR,universities, CNR research centres, + service providers: NILDE, Elsevier- based on Shibboleth CASPUR and CILEA continue their activities in providing services to universities in support of Open Access (hosting of DSpace and E-prints installations, management of some installations, consulting activities), also running the Italian digital platform to OA repositories -PLEIADI CILEA developed a new product to integrate Research Information System and Institutional Archives (Surplus)

CIBER/CASPUR: No new contracts: mainly renewal of the existing 16 contracts Close collaboration with the other two consortia (CILEA and CIPE) and active role in CARE A consortial installation of SFX managed by CASPUR for medium –sized universities (presently under trial for 12 universities) New website: more functionalities, more information on contracts for end-users and librarians Activities in promoting information on electronic publishing, digital libraries, digital preservation, Open Access – Newsletter (based on WordPress) More attention to Web 2.0: Blog; CIBER is on Facebook! Next Ciber seminar will be on these issues Next step will be more training for librarians using blended learning
