Environmental Decision Making and Risk Management for contaminated ground water and soil remediation using integrated approach of Neuro-fuzzy Vikas Kumar Supervisor: Dra. Marta Schuhmacher Environmental Management and Analysis Group ETSEQ, Rovira i Virgili University

Outline Introduction Technology overview Objectives Work Plan Summary

Introduction Problems of Environmental Risk : Measurable, The probability of an adverse event and the magnitude of the consequences… Problems of Environmental Risk : Measurable, Subjective, and Based on multi-criteria

Introduction Exposure pathways Exposure Media Source Transport Mechanism Exposure Media Receptors Soil dermal contact and ingestion Affected surface soil Wind erosion Atmospheric dispersion On-site receptor Inhalation of vapors and/or particulates Affected subsurface soils Volatilization Accumulation in enclosed space Groundwater ingestion Off-site receptor Leaching Affected Groundwater Groundwater transport Surface water, swimming, fish consumption, etc

Introduction Ground water and soil Contamination Causes: Agricultural waste Industrial waste Effluents from landfills Petroleum products Radioactive waste

Introduction Why this research? Till now: Tools used: Statistical methods Probabilistic methods Fuzzy methods Focused on single pollutant on single ecological process Not dealing with uncertainty Not dealing with multi-criteria and multiple stakeholders.

Technology overview Fuzzy Logic ? The statement, today is sunny. 100% true if there are no clouds, 80% true if there are a few clouds, 50% true if it's hazy and 0% true if it rains all day. “Fuzzy logic is a structured, model free estimator that approximates a function through linguistic input/output associations.”

Artificial Neural Network + Fuzzy logic Technology overview Neuro-fuzzy Artificial Neural Network + Fuzzy logic

Objective Create a methodological model which, taking into account subsoil and contaminants characteristics as well as human and environmental health risks features, help to make decisions in the prioritization about polluted soils remediation.

Identification of process and variables Work Plan Identification of process and variables Uncertainty analysis Knowledge base Fuzzy model Neural-fuzzy model Network training

Summary The Basic Risk Management Process Build the process Allocate Responsibilities Determine “What is to be Risk-Managed” A Decision-Making Process Iterative with Analysis to select mitigation Planning Identification Analysis Handling Communi- cation & Tracking Comparative Analysis Assign Attributes Assign Ownership Keep everyone aware of decisions made Track progress Evaluate effectiveness Evaluate the Impact “A” Risk “All” Risks Prepare Decision-packages
