2 History of Network Management Protocols On IP networks –Original design included Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) –Echo and echo reply can be used to gather data –Hosts that receive an ICMP echo packet must send an ICMP echo reply –This is the basis of PING (Packet InterNet Groper) PING –Sends an ICMP echo packet and waits for an ICMP echo reply –Can be used to determine overall turnaround time –Drawbacks Requires constant polling Non-return may NOT indicate lack of connectivity ICMP was not designed to provide a lot of information –Hard to make many decision based on this information –Need a standardised way of collecting other data –Two main technologies Simple Network Management protocol (SNMP) Common Management Information Services/ Common Management Information Protocol (CMIS/CMIP) –We will be looking at SNMP SNMP V SNMP V SNMP V3
