aLFANET September 23th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshopValkenburg Authoring a full life cycle model in standards-based adaptive elearning Peter van Rosmalen Open Universiteit Nederland

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Overview 1. Introduction - Adaptation: a definition - Start situation - Standards - Alfanet LMS 2. Adaptation life cycle model - Life cycle model - Authoring support: template & catalogue - Authoring tools 3. Findings & Ways forward

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Introduction Adaptation: a definition Adaptation is about creating a learner experience that purposely adjusts to various conditions (personal characteristics, pedagogical knowledge, the learner interactions, the outcome of the actual learning processes) over a period of time with the intention to increase pre-defined success criteria (effectiveness of e-learning: score, time, economical costs, user satisfaction)

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Introduction Start situation System should be able to offer a combination of design and runtime adaptation: - author’s design knowledge & ‘system’ knowledge - learner profile & peer similarity System should avoid proprietary models and representations: - re-usable components - open architecture

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Introduction Standards Adaptation in aLFanet deliberately builds on a combination of e-learning ‘standards’ -increased initial investment but higher potential IMS LD: an explicit instructional design (any IDM) -- IMS Metadata (IEEE LOM) : the contents IMS LIP: the user IMS QTI: formal progress -- All delivered in IMS CP Challenge at the start of the project: - combined use of specifications - (very) limited experience and tools

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Introduction Groupware (.LRN) LD-engine (CopperCore) Alfanet Communication & Presentation Layer QTI-engine Adaptation Agents Audit Administration ….. Alfanet LMS - presentation & communication layer - services layer - data layer

Design Auditing feedback Publication UseAuditing Course and material design Central in the cycle is the design created in Learning Design (the template). The design contains the logic for the pre-designed adaptations and provides the hooks and the information upon which the runtime adaptation bases their reasoning. This combined with an analysis of the actual user interactions lead to the recommendations, adaptive dynamic tests & audit reports. Adaptation – a full life cycle Alfanet USE

Design Auditing feedback Alfanet USE: Presentation Layer LD-engine (CopperCore) Adaptation agents Dynamic adaptive assessments (QTI) Publication UseAuditing Course and material design Auditing is aimed to provide input about how successful the design is. Audit reports include: - the actual activity sequence - use of the learning objects - satisfaction statistics Adaptation – a full life cycle Auditing example: analyse the study path (actual activity sequence)

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Adaptation – adaptation design learner pre-knowledge characteristics progress similarity to peers Adaptation catalogue

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Authoring tools -Create Content (external tools) -Create Questions (external tools) -Creating Adaptive Test (QTI-tool > QTI player) -Creating the course model and the required additional data (LD authoring tool > CopperCore) Questions in Canvas > CP with QTI items Other content: e.g. Dreamweaver, Adobe QTI tool: Adaptive, rule based test LD authoring tool

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Authoring tools: LD Complex list of requirements Little experience to continue upon ->> Design of the authoring tool close to the specification to avoid problems with the expressiveness of the tool

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Authoring tools: LD

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Findings LMS + an adaptive (open) e-learning system: design & runtime adaptation standards based & integrated + a set of reusable (open source) components: LD- & QTI authoring tool & LD- & QTI engine; Adaptation- & Interaction package - interface & performance The Authoring process: - lack of integration - too many details - spec. constraints & adaptation constraints + use of templates

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Ways forward The authoring process: - emphasis on integration - propagation of choices and knowledge (2 levels) - use of (parts of) templates OR - Limited purpose dedicated authoring tools

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Authoring tools Example of a ‘Tree View” in the authoring tool

AUTHORING ADAPTATION September 23 th, 2005UNFOLD-PROLEARN workshop Authoring tools Sync = Synchronization with QTI-module Example of the Property editor in the authoring tool
