3 Future Internet services are rapidly moving towards an increasingly heterogeneous landscape with end users capable of creating, storing and delivering content and applications. To address this heterogeneity, FIGARO provides an evolutionary path to the Future Internet, departing from a centralized cloud-based architecture towards a federation of residential networks capitalizing on millions of residential networks to deliver content and services of the future. Goal Survey a large variety of home networks Study a large number of configurations Approach: First step HomeNet Profiler: a data collection tool for your home Will be shortly distributed to volunteers all over the world Second step: evaluating impact on e2e perofrmance

9 Home Network Optimization How can good performance be provided to specialized devices such as TV, gaming console at home when WiFi is used? We design a specialized AP for wireless home networks that arbitrates access to the medium so that specialized devices with throughput requirements are “protected", i.e., we attempt to impose some order in the network Features? o No modifications required for end devices o Based on Unsolicited CTS, scheduling and monitoring o Automatic Rate Adaptation is taken into account

It is not enough for our Internet community to work on: Reducing electricity use in data centers and telco infrastructure Usin Internet as a communication overlay Internet concepts can be used to smarten the grid: higher impact research! 11 Smart Grids: our hypothesis

Our proposition: ISS4E To apply our expertise in Information Systems and Sciences to find innovative solutions to problems in energy systems. We work in collaboration with researchers in related disciplines: we are part of WISE (Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy) partners in industry Goal: have impact both in Canada and around the world Initial focus is smart grids, where energy systems converge with information systems 12
