Current Status Following EU recommendations, the NED program has been divided into two phases –Phase I groups together all the tasks related to conductor development and includes some limited studies on conductor insulation, –Phase II groups together all the tasks related to the detailed design, manufacturing and test of a large-aperture (up to 88 mm), high-field (up to 15 T) dipole magnet model. Phase I has been approved as part of the CARE project (~13 staff.year over 3 years; total cost: ~2 M€; requested EU funding: 979 k€). A strategy is being devised among NED collaborators to find the funding necessary to carry out Phase II (~22 staff.year, material costs: ~1.2 M€).

NED Phase I The Phase I of the NED Program is articulated around four Work Packages 1Management & Communication (M&C), 2Thermal Studies and Quench Protection (TSQP), 3Conductor Development (CD), 4Insulation Development and Implementation (IDI). The Activity is coordinated by A. Devred (CEA & CERN), helped by A. den Ouden (Twente University).

Cost and Manpower Distributions Among NED WP Total Expected Costs (2,093 k€) Total Manpower (152 staff.month)

NED Collaborators Six institutes have agreed to collaborate to NED — CCLRC/RAL (UK), — CEA/DSM/DAPNIA (France), — CERN/AT (International), — INFN/Milano-LASA & INFN/Genova (Italy), — Twente University (the Netherlands), — Wroclaw University (Poland). A seventh institute (CIEMAT, Spain) has expressed interest in joining the collaboration and is ready to commit 1.5 staff.year of manpower to Phase I and to contribute significantly to Phase II.

Steering Committee The oversight of NED is ensured by a Steering Committee (SC) made up of –E. Baynham (RAL) –A. Devred, Chairman (CEA & CERN) –D. Leroy (CERN) –A. den Ouden, Secretary (TEU) –J.M. Rifflet (CEA) –G. Volpini (INFN) The first meeting took place on January 8, The next meeting is scheduled on March 25, 2004.

External Scientific Advisory Committee The JRA Coordinator is helped by an External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) made up of –J.L. Duchateau (CEA) –H.H.J. ten Kate (CERN & TEU) –P. Lebrun (CERN) –L. Rossi (CERN) –R.M. Scanlan (retired from LBNL) –J.B. Strait, Chairman (FNAL) The first meeting is scheduled on March 24, A document defining the charges of the committee is being circulated among its members.

Logistics & General Organization A. den Ouden is setting up a web page A. Devred is investigating the possibility of using the CERN, web-based Engineering Data Management Service (EDMS) to circulate and store documents. Following the January Steering Committee, A. Initial Proposal for TSQP WP In the initial proposal, the TSQP Work Package was supposed to address four main issues 1.What will be the level of power deposition from beam losses on NED coils?  beam loss computations (INFN/Milano-LASA; cut in final proposal) 2.How does Nb 3 Sn conductor insulation behave in He environment and how much heat can be transferred through it?  heat-transfer measurements (CEA & WUT; approved in final proposal) 3.What is the optimum magnet cooling scheme?  numerical model (WUT; cut in final proposal) 4.What the optimum quench protection scheme?  quench computations (INFN/Milano-LASA; approved in final proposal)

Present TSQP Work Package The present TSQP Work Package is divided up into three Tasks 2.1Work Package coordination 2.2 heat-transfer measurements through N 3 Sn conductor insulation (CEA/DSM/DAPNIA & Wroclaw University of Technology, under CEA/DSM/DAPNIA supervision) 2.3 quench protection computations (INFN/Milano-LASA) It is coordinated by G. Volpini (INFN/Milano-LASA)

Task 2.2: Heat Transfer Measurements (1/2) The January SC meeting has defined the parameter space and has established a “wish list” for the heat transfer measurements. The wish list includes – to perform fundamental R&D on “innovative” insulation to study its alleged porosity to helium I and II, – to characterize thermal performances in helium I and II of samples representative of insulated conductors in magnet coils subjected to static heat deposition (in the 50-to-80 mW/cm 3 range). The wish list has has been communicated on 21 January 2004 to the relevant persons at CEA/DSM/DAPNIA with the charge of defining a Program fitting within the allocated resources.

Task 2.3: Quench Computations (1/2) Similarly to what has been done for Task 2.2, the January SC meeting has defined the parameter space and has established a “wish list” for the quench computations. The wish list includes – to establish a comparison of existing quench codes in Europe, – to establish a European database on thermal material properties, – to study the influence of Cu-to-non-Cu ratio, Cu RRR, magnet length, quench heater design and location, and quench back on NED baseline design. The wish list has has been communicated on 13 February 2004 to M. Sorbi, who will be responsible to carry out this Task at INFN/Milano- LASA, with the charge of defining a Program.

Missing Tasks of TSQP Work Package Two important tasks have been deleted from the initial proposal – beam loss computations, – coil cooling optimization. We are looking into  building upon INFN/Milano-LASA experience to run limited beam loss computations for one conservative scenario of LHC IR upgrade,  building upon existing CERN/WUT collaboration to adapt an existing numerical model to NED baseline design.

CD Work Package The CD Work Package is divided up into seven Tasks 3.1 Work Package coordination 3.2 Preliminary magnet design aimed at deriving meaningful specifications (CERN/AT) 3.3 Conductor specifications (CERN/AT) 3.4 Wire development (two industrial sub-contracts under CERN/AT supervision) 3.5 Wire characterization (CEA/DSM/DAPNIA, INFN/Milano-LASA and /Genova, Twente University) 3.6 Cable development (under CERN/AT supervision) 3.7 Cable Characterization (Twente University) It is coordinated by D. Leroy (CERN/AT).

Task 3.2: Preliminary Magnet Design (1/2) Olivier Vincent-Viry (CERN/AT) has studied several magnetic designs to achieve ~15 T in a 88-mm aperture Conventional cos  designMotor-type block design

Task 3.2: Preliminary Magnet Design (2/2) Results were presented at the January SC meeting and will be published in a report due in March They converge towards the following pre-specifications – same cable for all conductor blocks, one strand type – strand diameter: 1.25 mm, – Cu-to-non-Cu ratio: 1.25, – J C -non-Cu: 1500 A/mm 2 at 4.2 K and 15 T, – effective filament diameter < 50  m (no flux jump), – Cu RRR > 70, – cable interstrand resistance: TBD, – quantity: 500 m of cable, corresponding to ~10 km of wires.

Tasks 3.3, 3.4 & 3.6: Conductor Development (1/4) A market survey had been carried out by D. Leroy in early 2003 to which three manufacturers had answered positively – Alstom/MSA (France), – European Advanced Superconductors (formerly Vacuumschmelze, Germany) – ShapeMetal Innovation (the Netherlands) The manufacturers had agreed to contribute financially to the Program by at least matching the EU funding. EAS and SMI had declared they would study the possibility of forming a joint venture.

Tasks 3.3, 3.4 & 3.6: Conductor Development (2/4) A. Devred and D. Leroy have made three preparatory visits to the manufacturers having answered positively to the market survey – 12 December 2003: Alstom/MSA (with T. Boutboul and L. Oberli, CERN/AT), – 15 December 2003: EAS (with L. Oberli, CERN/AT, and a SMI representative), – 27 January 2004: SMI (with T. Boutboul and L. Oberli, CERN/AT, A. Unerwik, CERN/FI, A. den Oudent, TEU and two EAS representatives).

Tasks 3.3, 3.4 & 3.6: Conductor Development (3/4) The manufacturers confirmed that our goals were ambitious but feasible. Alstom/MSA, on one side, and EAS/SMI, on the other side, are developing a strategy to achieve our goals with a methodology scalable to industrial production. EAS and SMI are talking to each other and we have reasonable hope that they will respond to our call for tender as a consortium.

Tasks 3.3, 3.4 & 3.6: Conductor Development (4/4) The next milestones of the Conductor Development Tasks are – ongoing: preparation of conductor specifications, – mid-may 2004: call for tender (extended to all EU manufacturers), – June 30, 2004: contracts’ handout. CERN/AT has identified T. Boutboul as the main person responsible for the follow-up of the industrial contracts.

Task 3.5: Wire Characterization (1/3) The January SC has decided the creation of a Working Group on Wire Characterization, that will be chaired by A. den Ouden (TEU). The Working Group will include – one representative from each laboratory involved in the measurements (CEA/DSM/DAPNIA, INFN/Milano and /Genova, TEU) – the CERN person responsible for industrial contract follow-up, – one representative from each industrial sub-contractor.

Task 3.5: Wire Characterization (2/3) The charges of the Working Group are – to establish an inventory of existing facilities among NED collaborators, – to define standardized procedures to characterize the transport-current and magnetization properties of virgin, deformed and extracted wires, – to develop and carry out a program of cross-calibration of the various facilities for critical current measurements, – to certifying the measured data throughout the execution of Task 3.5.

Task 3.5: Wire Characterization (3/3) The main milestones and expected deliverables of the Working Group are – 25 March 2004: Working Group installation, – 30 June 2004: procedures (to be included in industrial sub-contracts) and cross-calibration program, – 31 December 2004: report on cross-calibration program, – 30 June 2005: first characterization results, – 30 December 2005: interim report on wire characterization (EU Milestone), – 30 June 2006: final report on wire characterization (EU Deliverable).

Missing Tasks of CD Work Package INFN/Genova has agreed to develop FE models of wires to compute the stress/strain distributions upon transverse loading and simulate the effects of cabling. IDI Work Package The IDI Work Package is divided up into four Tasks 4.1Work Package coordination 4.2Insulation specifications (CCLRC/RAL) 4.3R&D on conventional insulation (CCLRC/RAL) 4.4 R&D on innovative insulation (CEA/DAPNIA/SAC) It is coordinated by E. Baynham (CCLRC/RAL)

Task 4.2: Insulation Specifications The January SC meeting has decided the creation of a Working Group on insulation, that will be chaired by E. Baynham (CCLRC/RAL). The membership and charges of the Working Group have yet to be defined. The Group will be responsible for establishing an engineering specification and a set of standard tests applicable to both insulation types.

Task 4.3 & 4.4: Insulation Development J. Greenhalgh will coordinate the work on conventional insulation at CCLRC/RAL (Task 4.3), while F. Rondeaux will coordinate the work on innovative insulation at CEA/DSM/DAPNIA (Task 4.4). Details of the R&D Program will be discussed during A. Devred visit to RAL (with F. Rondeaux and P. Védrine) on 19 March 2004.

Re-enacting MDO Work Package (1/2) Some manpower is now available for magnet design and optimization – 9 staff.month from CCLRC/RAL (included in NED Phase I contract), – 18 staff.month from CIEMAT, plus – a graduate student who started a 3-year contract at CEA/DSM/DAPNIA in November 2003 on a topic closely related to NED (under the supervision of Pierre Védrine), – CERN/AT is looking for a technical student at Torino University, who would be invited to Geneva for two years and who could work at least for one year on NED (under the supervision of Paolo Fessia).

Re-enacting MDO Work Package (2/2) The available manpower (with profiles not needed elsewhere in the Program) enables us to re-enact the Magnet Design and Optimization (MDO) Work Package, that was included in the original proposal, but was finally deleted. The January SC meeting decided to create an MDO Working Group, that will be chaired by Pierre Védrine (CEA/DSM/DAPNIA). The membership and charge of the Working Group have yet to be defined. Once formed, the Working Group will brainstorm to propose a Program, that will be reviewed by relevant ESAC members and approved by the Steering Committee.

Towards Model Magnet Manufacturing Preliminary discussions with CIEMAT have shown that they were also interested in participating to NED Phase II (detailed design and manufacturing of model magnet). For instance, they would be ready to ask a grant from the Spanish government to cover the material costs needed to manufacture NED coils (~250 k€) and CIEMAT would contribute the manpower to do the job. As CIEMAT has little experience with Nb 3 Sn technology, they need some training, which could be done by associating them to ongoing programs at CEA/DSM/DAPNIA and TEU. Once the coils are manufactured, it should be easier to convince one of the big laboratories to complete model magnet assembly.
