Mrs. Logan Fifth Grade Welcome!

Welcome to Fifth Grade! I will introduce you to fifth grade and to our classroom. If you have any questions during my presentation, please feel free to ask.

All About Me My background I grew up in Wilson, Kansas. I attended Wilson Grade School, Wilson High School, and Fort Hays State University. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in 1984. My experience I’ve been teaching for 24 years. I have also taught Title 1 Reading, second grade, and fourth grade. Fifth grade is my favorite.

My Family My husband Clint My child daughter, Robyn, age 5

My Goals To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to sixth grade. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help my students make new friends and discover new interests.

Class Subjects The subjects we cover during fifth grade: Reading Language Arts Spelling Math Social Studies Science

Reading McGraw Hill Reading Series Novels Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, and more. Assessments We will take unit tests throughout the year and State Reading Assessments in the Spring. Silent Reading Each day we will take 15 minutes to silent read. Students will be responsible for having a library book to read that is in the Accelerated Reader program.

Reading Accelerated Reader Book It! Each nine weeks your child will set a reading goal based on points. You, your child, and I will sign a contract stating the number of points they will need to achieve. A letter grade will be given each nine weeks in accordance to reaching this goal. Book It! We will participate in this program starting in October and ending in March. I require 300 minutes each month. This reading is completed at home and monitored by parents.

Language Arts McGraw Hill English Series Daily Oral Language Unit 1 – Sentences/Personal Narratives Unit 2 – Nouns/Persuasive Writing Unit 3 – Verbs/Technical Writing Unit 4 – Adjectives/Expository Writing Unit 5 – Pronouns /Compare & Contrast Writing Unit 6 – Adverbs, Prepositions, & Interjections/ Story Writing Daily Oral Language Students will be learning grammar rules by correcting two sentence a day and a paragraph each week. At the end of the week students will be given a quiz to test skills.

Spelling Rebecca Sitton Spelling Students will be given 15 words at the beginning of each week. Throughout the week students will complete sentences, games, and lessons using these words. At the end of each week they will take a spelling review over these words. Spelling words are cumulative. Once they have been taught they are expected to be mastered. Ten priority words will also be expected to be mastered each week. These words are expected to never be misspelled. Students will keep a highlighted list of these words throughout the year.

Math Silver Burdett Ginn Series Assessments Chapter 1 – Understanding Place Value Chapter 2 – Adding & Subtracting Whole Numbers & Decimals Chapter 3 – Data & Statistics Chapter 4 – Multiplying Whole Numbers Chapter 5 – Dividing by One-Digit Divisors Chapter 6 – Dividing by Two-Digit Divisors Chapter 7 – Geometry Chapter 8 – Multiplying and Dividing Decimals Chapter 9 – Fractions Concepts Chapter 10 – Fractions Chapter 11 – Measurements Chapter 12 – Ratio, Percent, & Probability Assessments State Math Assessments will be taken in the spring.

Science Scott Foresman Series Unit 1 – Life Science Unit 2 – Physical Science Unit 3 – Earth Science Unit 4 – Human Body In each chapter there are several lessons. Each lesson will have a quiz which students will complete like a worksheet. After each chapter, students will take a chapter test. A study guide will be sent home to help prepare them for the test. Watch for the study guide in your child’s home school folder. At the top of each study guide will be the date of the test. You can also find out test dates by watching the assignment calendar.

“United States History: Early Years” Social Studies Houghton Mifflin Series “United States History: Early Years” Unit 1 – Our Land and First People Unit 2 – Exploration and Settlement Unit 3 – The English Colonies Unit 4 – The American Revolution We will read and discuss together information in the book. Students will be given worksheets to reinforce this information. A study guide will be handed out after each chapter is read. Watch for these in your child’s home school folder. At the top of each study guide will be the date of the test. You can also find out test dates by watching the assignment calendar.

Band and Study Hall Band Study Hall Students will have an opportunity to participate in band. Band is a 50 minute class period each day. Details as to how the program works will be given out by the band instructor. Study Hall Students who do not participate in band will be placed in a 50 minute study hall. This is a great time to get additional help on school work and have more time to work on homework.

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules are: Be respectful and responsible. Be organized and follow directions. Be on time. Be prepared.

Homework and Assignment Calendar I will assign homework as needed. Some class time will be given to complete assignments. Some additional time at home may be needed to complete these assignments. Your homework is due the next class day after it is assigned unless otherwise stated. Watch the assignment calendar for due dates. If you need extra time to work on your homework, you can go to homework club during recess to work on it. All students are expected to keep an assignment calendar and transport it to and from school daily. Parents are asked to check it daily and sign it when the homework is completed. I will check each student’s calendar daily to make sure assignments are filled out, and I will sign it. Students will place one line through completed work and circle work to be completed. Late work will be highlighted.

Homework Policy I am focusing on student responsibility. The main responsibilities are staying organized and getting work completed on time. This is completed by using the home school folder and the assignment calendar. I will not accept homework that is late more than 24 hours. If your child has a late assignment, they have one day to get it completed and turned in. Any work later than that will be given a zero in the grade book.

Grades You can assess your child’s grades by computer. From our school web site you will need to click on Pro/STAR Student Management Software. You will then have to apply for an account. Follow the instructions and you will be issued a login name and password. This will allow you to check your child’s grades anytime. If you do not have a computer a progress report can be sent home anytime. I keep my grade book up to date weekly to keep you posted on your child’s grades.

Tardiness School starts at 8:10 A.M. If students arrive earlier, they are to report to the gym. They are then dismissed from the gym at 8:05 A.M. This gives them 5 minutes to get to class before the bell rings to start the school day. If students aren’t in the classroom by 8:10 A.M., they are required to check in at the school office before coming to class.

Field Trips We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year! We will attend Ag Awareness Day at the Ottawa County Fair Grounds on September 5, 2007. We will visit the Pawnee Indian Village in Republic County as part of our social studies unit on “Our Land and First People”. This trip will be in late September or October. We will take a trip to Abilene, KS to visit the Eisenhower Museum in May. Other trips will be planned as needed.
