Integrating Technology: Beyond Publishing and PowerPoint Session 2: How did we get from the Internet to Web 2.0? What is a Personal Digital Library? Why do I need one? February 20, 2008 Tammy Russell

Evolution of the World Wide Web for a Digital Immigrant

 Where was I when this global shift of Web 2.0 happened?  I was dumbfounded, critical, and generally opposed to letting elementary-aged students loose on Web 2.0.  Perhaps I was not paying enough attention to the changes in technology. Perhaps I was stuck in opposition to the exponential rate of technology in our lives.  (circa 1996)…the information I found was no more complex, interesting, visually stimulating, or multimedia than I could have found searching through a library. Information on the web was simply that—information placed on the web to give us easier access to paper-based texts…the web was an acceptable source of information and was right at our fingertips.

 All of a sudden, images, videos, instant messaging, class discussion boards, newspaper articles, downloadable music, and multi-media websites were exploding on the web, giving students and the like access to all of this with a simple click of our Internet Explorer icon.  The internet was full of rich information that quite possibly could no longer be found in a library.  Only website designers and commoners with a good understanding of hypertext markup language (HTML) could produce pages for the web.  Web 2.0, an internet that we can use to create, manipulate, display, communicate, share, and access information, videos, podcasts, blogs, and more.  Web 2.0 is an engaging, motivating, and tremendously educational tool for the classroom.  It has the power to revolutionize education.

The Machine is Using Us  Web 2.0  Scary huh?  “Web 2.0 is Linking People… …people sharing, trading, and collaborating…”  The Machine is Us  WHO WILL ORGANIZE ALL OF THIS DATA?????  We will (have to!).

Personal Digital Libraries David Warlick, 2004  Control of Information has shifted from (static) Textbooks and Teachers  (dynamic) Digital/ Internet Content and Students

Implications for Teachers: Bring Technology Into the classroom  “The internet is a big place that is constantly changing both in its content and how we go about connecting with that content.”  Personal Information Digital Libraries: Social Networking In Plain English: The Common Craft Show

What Makes a Good (Educational) Website Enhances and reinforces learning experiences Images that add to the content May include Content-Appropriate Videos Sound clips and animation when appropriate Interactive/ENGAGING Games Is organized rather than overwhelming Intends for the audience to be children No Advertisements/Pop-ups Self-checking (math, keyboarding, quizzes) Source seems trustworthy; information does not contradict our understandings and curriculum May link to additional noteworthy websites (these links are appropriate rather than unsafe)
