Petri Net Modelling of Ecosystem Services: Methodological Development E. A. Fongwa, A. Gnauck and F. Müller Brandenburg University of Technology at Cottbus and Ecology Centre, University of Kiel

Contents Introduction Conceptual Model Execution Data structure Application Conclusions

Introduction Human beings continuously living with uncertainty of their future environment Increasing environmental hazards due to sinks in Ecosystem Services (ES) that protect the environment Valuing ES to preserve them within different stakeholders (Demand and supply sides) in a community has been a big problem Characteristics of ES

Introduction (continue) Valuing them (water-diamond paradox) contributes to environmental protection requiring appropriate management support tools A Petri net is developed as a tool for balancing ES through estimation, management and financing The objective is to provide a management support tool for balancing ES at a landscape scale that can contribute to environmental protection

Conclusions Petri net is a good tool for modelling ES Eventhough the biophysical processes and human behavioral structure are only assumed Sychronisation techniques with Petri nets offers the possibilities for their inclusure, but the problem is lack of appropriate information making it a challenge However, this is the first attempt of modelling ES with Petri nets requiring a long term research with it
