IEEE-Technical Activities

Societies/Councils products and initiatives l Publications: Edit over 125 magazines, and journals. High Quality: 30 out of top 35 journals and magazines in world. l Sponsors the development of a large number of standards, including the 802 Series. l Conferences: financially sponsors more than 400 events a year. In addition, technically co-sponsors over 250 conferences/workshops

Where IEEE Sponsored/Co-Sponsored Conferences Were Held 43.9% R % R7-10

Societies/Councils products and initiatives (2) l Develop educational products: Tutorials, on line courses, certification programs l Sponsors a large number of technical recognition awards. l Provide networking opportunities for professionals and students with similar technical interests.

Challenges and Opportunities

Top Issues (Cont.) l How do we create compelling value propositions for society membership? l How can TA create new means of delivering our products? l How do we create products (publications, conferences, educational offerings, ….) for practicing engineers with applications focus? l How do we continue to attract competent leaders?

Participate in tools where young engineers are playing Take IEEE/Societies to them, not require them coming to us Look for opportunities to bind together the Mentors and Youth through social networking opportunities

Technical Activities Goals for Develop products of value to industrial technical practitioners and increase employer perception of the value of society membership 2. Make IEEE’s presence in emerging opportunities publicly visible, providing a single focal point for access to technical information in a given area. 3. Develop a technology roadmap for IEEE Technical Activities l Effort to organize IEEE-TA products by Sectors that better represent areas of broad interest and appeal to society. 4. Increase the perceived value of society membership to young professionals. 5. Identify and develop products and services that result in long term IEEE and S/C membership renewal.

Guarding the Future of engineering New Technologies l New Tech groups grew to 10 l Biotechnology and Bioengineering* l Distributed Intelligent Networks and Systems l Future Power and Alternative Energy Technologies* l Digital Intellectual Property l Earth Observations* l Organic Electronics l Biometrics* l Portable Information Devices l RFID l Technological Innovations for Efficient Energy Use and Energy Use management l "IEEE New Technology Connections” portal, integrated with Technology Discourses and features IEEE.tv short segments. l Conferences and Workshops l Portable 2007 l IEEE RFID 2007 l Second IEEE-Boeing Technology Conference l Second Electric Ship Conference (ESTS) l Biometrics l Energy 2030 (2008)
