New product development Iris Steen, Director of Communications and Gavin Nettleton, Principal Advisor on E-learning 14 June 2007

What we know  Stakeholders value quality and rigour of SCIE resources  Service user focus is a strength  60-70% say that SCIE’s work is excellent or good

What we know  Statutory providers most likely to use SCIE services  Voluntary or private sector least likely to know or use  Practice guides and knowledge reviews – most commonly used resource

What we know  90% use our website  Four times more interviewees accessed information via website than via guide books  Higher level of e-literacy  But some people do not or cannot use computer

Your recommendations  Include more information on best practice on website  Improve publicity and marketing  Produce more user-friendly summaries  Include detailed case studies of use of products in practice  Produce resources that are more practical and less academic

Our plans  Develop a marketing campaign approach  Increase communication with private and voluntary providers  Review our product range and content  Case studies on use of resources  Develop more interactive resources  Review of website

E-learning resources Gavin Nettleton, Principal Advisor on E-learning And Colin Paton, E-learning Project Manager 14 June 2007

Thinking outside the box

Background  E-learning  A reminder of what SCIE’s view of e-learning is:  'If someone is learning in a way that uses information and communication technologies, then they are e-learning.'

Headline achievements in e-learning  A major study in e-learning readiness within the sector by Mori  the first 10 learning objects with 20 more in production and 30 proposed  First phases of a European project - Process-oriented Learning and Information eXchange (Prolix) designed to align learning with business processes via competency gap identification  Supporting Induction in Social care (SISCo) a regional study and pilot focussing on the basic skills and induction processes in the sector

Overall features of the work  The research undertaken so far points to a growing awareness and readiness in the sector to e-learning and ICT use  SCIE’s work on content was eagerly awaited has been well received, and we are very conscious of the need to provide engaging, accessible and high quality products  Our work within the European project is raising issues about just how ready the small operators in our sector are  We have produced our first sets of material and work in progress can be viewed online

Over the horizon  Mobile technologies  Ubiquity of provision  Knowledge management and development  Virtual service users in training  Web 2.0  Blended approaches which further blur any distinctions we now make  Blogging and communities of learners

SISCo: using a Skills Check  You have just appointed a care assistant  They need to be able to understand safety signage  You want to check if they have the skills to do this  Go to >>

SISCo: Skills Check 08  Skills Check 08 is in your delegate pack  All Skills Checks contain:  manager guidance  Skills Check activity  feedback sheet  personal development planning form  User-friendly for manager and staff member

SISCo: what’s different?  Aimed at employers, not basic skills experts  Basic skills definition grounded in social care standards  Tools offer genuine learning about care work as well as providing evidence of basic skills  Can provide evidence for AQAA/inspection

Further information  Sara Dunn (project manager)  Website (launched today)

… and finally  Tell us what you think about:  Our existing resources  Our plans  Other organisations’ work that you value  Complete section on evaluation form
