Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Demonstration of the MESMUSES portal at the “Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie” of Paris. Francis Malézieux

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Contents Main objectives of a semantic portal at CSI User interaction; a scenario Online demonstration First results Conclusion and prospects

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Main objectives of a semantic portal Provide high-school teachers (life sciences domain) with an application to select content for preparing a course –30% of CSI visitors are from education ( teachers and pupils visit CSI each year) –enable teachers to search for content using criteria like the grade level of classroom, topics in the official program, concepts of life-sciences itself, topical events from daily news Explore new types of scientific mediation –manually/automatically classified information/internet access –integrated and homogeneous description of our contents

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie User interaction : a scenario From generic to specific browsing educational program topics and grade level of classroom as entry-points links to associated life-sciences concepts at any step, access to related resources From specific to generic entry-points are life-sciences concepts links to others life-sciences concepts and to educational program topics at any step, access to related resources Searching against the resources many criteria to be used, like concepts, program topics, attributes of resources (e.g. pupils activity, type)

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Portal : user interface concepts Tree view of thematic folders (educational program topics, life-sciences concepts, resources) Search / results area (list of program topics, life sciences concepts, resources) Detailed view of a folder, a resource or list of resources Bookmarks area (save of requests)

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Portal : Online demonstration

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie First results With MESMUSES Portal, at this step –application to a thematic domain (to be extended to the whole offre de la Cité) –evaluation with real users is ongoing (teachers to test and evaluate the portal) –first test of an automatic categorisation (GammaSite) Tracks for improvements –high level user interface adapted to different user profiles (e.g. teachers/pupils) –individual browsing through itineraries –seamlessly integration with automatic categorisation (e.g. conceptual schema/taxonomy)

Florence Workshop, 16th June 2003 The MESMUSES portal of La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie Conclusion, prospects at the Cité des Sciences Describe contents –the whole contents of CSI are candidates (exhibitions, guided activities, lectures, web site...) –in an integrated way (relationships between contents, e.g. media library and exhibits, links to web contents and others Museums and Libraries) Improve navigation tools –provide the visitor with a global view of available contents on any media –various means to access contents like portal, itineraries
