Presentation transcript:

Health Education: Avoid or Reduce Health Risks By Kristy Seaver What are health risks?? What are ways to avoid and reduce these risks???

National Health Education Standard 7 Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. Target Audience : 3-5 grade level Standard: 7.5.3 Objectives: Demonstrate behaviors that avoid or reduce health risks. Give examples of behaviors that avoid or reduce risks. First we will come up with some examples of healthy behaviors to do that avoid or reduce health risks. And then we will discuss proper techniques that demonstrate these behaviors.

What are healthy behaviors? So what are healthy behaviors?? ***Need audience participation for this slide.

Dental Health What kinds of things damage your teeth? Sugar Not brushing Not flossing All that sugar really does damage to your teeth. Drinking soda pop is not a healthy behavior.

How to take care of your teeth Brush ALL your teeth at least twice a day Spend 3 minutes brushing Learn how to floss your teeth Visit the dentist twice a year So now that we have identified brushing your teeth as a healthy behaviors, we need to know how to demonstrate it by ourselves and how to take care of our teeth.

What are we avoiding? Gingivitis Bad breath Cavities Gum Disease Oral Cancer So what are we avoiding? Why don’t we want these diseases? This is a picture of gum disease. Don’t you all want a healthy happy mouth? So lets brush our teeth to avoid these health risks.

Do you get enough sleep? How much sleep do you think you should get each night?? Do you think sleeping is a healthy behavior? ** Need participation from audience before moving on to next slide.

Sleep What are the risks involved?? Most kids between 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours a night, but really you need 10 or 11 hours each night. What are the risks involved?? Being sick all the time Not able to follow directions Getting other diseases. Sleep is very important, especially at these ages. So If you do not get a full nights rest you wont be able to process what you learned. Your immune system is weak so you will be sick more often. You will have a hard time being able to follow directions. It could lead to other diseases that would cause more problems. So my guess is you all want to get the right amount of sleep.

How to get more sleep Try to go to bed at the same time Have a calming bedtime routine Limit intake of caffeinated drinks or foods near bedtime. Don’t watch scary shows close to bedtime. Now that we know sleep is important and a healthy behavior, lets look at how we can get more sleep so we avoid some health risks.

Germs The average desk harbors 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat. An average of 1 in 6 people wash their hands after using the restroom. These are some pretty disgusting statistics. Germs are everywhere.

What do germs cause? Common cold Bacterial diseases Vomiting Diarrhea And others Even though germs are tiny little things they cause a whole lot of diseases. So we should learn proper healthy behaviors to reduce our risks.

How to prevent getting germs? WASH YOUR HANDS!!! When is the best time? before eating or touching food  after using the bathroom after blowing your nose or coughing before and after visiting a sick person So how do we prevent getting germs?

How to wash your hands Use warm water Use soap Make you lather up all over Wash for 10-15 seconds, sing Happy Birthday Rinse and dry with a clean towel. This is the proper technique for washing your hands in order to reduce your risks of catching a disease.

Healthy behaviors Brushing Your Teeth Getting Enough Sleep Washing your hands So this is what we learned today. That brushing your teeth, getting enough sleep, and washing your hands are all healthy behaviors that help you reduce or avoid health risks.
