1.Define stress and explain the different types. 2.Define stressor and list some of the stressors you deal with each day. 3.Describe the body’s response to stress. 4.List positive coping mechanism that can be used to deal with stress.

The body and minds reaction to everyday demands or threats. Stress is a normal part of everyday life. How you respond to stress is different for each individual.

Positive stress We need a certain amount of stress in our lives to keep us productive! Example:studying hard for a test, getting married, having a baby, finding a job.

Negative Stress This type of stress may be difficult to deal with and may cause them to turn to negative coping mechanisms. Example: getting divorced, loved one dying, getting sick, loosing your job, fighting ect…

Any stimulus that produces a stress response. These may be people, places, sounds, objects, situations, or memories. Snowball fight!!!!!!!!!

The first stage in the stress response, when the body and the mind go on high alert. This “Fight or Flight” response provides you with energy to get you through the real or perceived emergency. Your body releases a substance called adrenaline into your blood.

The second stage in the stress response when the body tries to repair its damage form the stressful event and return to it’s normal state. During this stage physical resistance to the stress reaches a peak. This is why people in extremely high situations have been know to accomplish incredible feats of strength. Such as lifting a car off of a person trapped in an accident. The body is at a higher than normal level. It is not healthy to stay in this stage for long periods of time.

The third stage of the stress response, resulting in a tired feeling that lowers one’s level of activity. The body and mind become worn down. Prolonged periods of stress can lead to stress related illness. Although many of these can be minor, they can also be life threatening. (high blood pressure, migraine headaches, asthma, cold, flu, heart disease, cancer ect.)
