My Experience at Bioinformatics Summer Academy! My Experience at Bioinformatics Summer Academy! By: Binisha Maharjan

First Thoughts! Before this workshop opened I didn’t really understand what bioinformatics was. But now I know more about it more than I did before. Bioinformatics is the analysis of biological information, which in the process you get to work with computers and statistical techniques. I thought that this workshop would be really interesting to try out. On Monday morning I was really excited and wanted to see what was in store for me!

What I learned! Many things. I learned the different processes. Like how RNA happens. After the last step of the RNA process is the translation which makes the proteins. I also learned how to use Bio-Linux. Before this workshop and if you asked me how to use Bio-Linux was I would probably say, “I honestly don’t know what your talking about….” BUT! Now...I know how to use it. I also learned how to read DNA, which is pretty cool. I first thought it was bunch of letters, but actually 3 of the letters represent a code!

Dislikes: I didn’t like when we were using Bio-Linux and something wouldn’t work! But, the awesome teachers were there to help! So thank you for that! When we were making the DNA bracelets, it was a little difficult trying not to mess up!

Likes: The workshop in general was pretty awesome! I also enjoyed the strawberry lab where we were able to extract the DNA from 2 strawberries. I think that these kind of activities really is a fun way to learn. I also really enjoyed making the DNA bracelet. I thought It was awesome how we were like encoding a code!

I just wanted to say Thank You for spending time with us! I really enjoyed these past days! ♥
