If you are upgrading from an early SAS As with any install on Windows, be sure to back-up your machine before you install software. I use the Windows control panel to remove all SAS programs before I upgrade. This gets rid of all the old programs that SAS provided but keeps my work intact. After uninstalling everything I reboot. After rebooting I find the SAS folder in the Programs Folder and delete it and then reboot again. You should not have saved into that folder but if you saved your work there obviously you want to move it before deleting the folder. This process takes a while and in theory is not necessary but it helps to assure that you have a completely clean install of SAS.

JAVA SAS will want to use JAVA. Get it here: java.com/en/. If you think that you have the latest version (6 Update 27), you can use the Do I have Java? hyperlink on the page to double-check. java.com/en/ Do I have Java?

Installing SAS The next slides show you how to check what version of Windows you are running. Keep in mind that SAS only works correctly on Windows Professional or better versions of XP, Vista or 7. All Home editions of Windows will have problems running SAS. Use the following notes to check to see if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit Windows and then download the correct version of SAS 9.3.

Make a folder to store the SAS installer Below you see how to make a folder called archive on your c: drive with Windows 7. Double click Computer on the desktop then: When the new folder appears type archive. Mac users, if you don’t know how to make a folder on your c:\ drive please ask for help if you have any questions.

After paying You will get two s. The second will have the link to download: Click the real address The download can take HOURS off campus. Use a wired connection on campus if you can.

Save the download tool to the archive folder:

Double click the Computer icon on your desktop and use the left windowpane to browse to the c:\archive folder then… … double click this. This program is a downloading tool. It will get you the SAS software depot and start the installer.

On campus with a wired connection the download takes about 45 minutes. Off campus it may take many hours. Start the download and go out to dinner…

Using the SAS Installer Depot After the download you have the SAS install depot saved on your box. Installing can take less than 5 minutes or over an hour depending on your machine.

The archive folder will have the full SAS installer Depot. You do not need to download again. The following slides show you how to install. If you forget to install part of SAS double-click the setup program to add parts later.

Check “on” the boxes shown in this and the following 2 slides before pushing next. Some will not be checked by default so check carefully. If you have Office 2007 or 2010.

If you must run 32 bit Office on a 64 bit machine add this also. See slide 49.See slide 49.

The archive folder will have more than 8 Gig of data. Keep if until you are certain that you have everything you need. Then delete if you need room.

Getting Patches Remember where you save the patch files. Installing patches After downloading patches. Start the SAS deployment Wizard: Click this.

Browse to the folder where you saved the downloads. After patching with E66014 You can check to see if you are patched here.

Can You Recognize File Types? Windows adds a period and a suffix to the names of files to indicate what program uses the file. By default, the suffix is hidden. Fix that and you will be sure to import the right file. No suffix shown.

32 bit vs 64 bit Excel Office 2010 can run in 32 bit and native 64 bit mode on a machine running 64 bit Windows bit SAS and 32 bit Office do not integrate. By default Office will install the 32 bit version. With 32 bit office you need to tweak SAS to get it to load Excel files or run 64 bit Office instead. Click to return to installer slide.

Installing 64 bit Office If you do not use Add-ons to office (like the SAM and PAM for microarray analysis plug ins) then you can install and run the 64 bit version of Excel. – If needed uninstall the 32 bit version of Office – Find the x64 folder on the Office DVD and run the setup program.

Using File Paths You can use Windows Explorer to find your files or you can add a button to MS Office products to show the path with a single click. With Office 2007 or 2010 it is easy to add a button, which will show up here, to show you the path when it is pushed.
