Diseases Contagious From Pigs Brucellosis Cysticercosis Neurocysticercosis Trichinosis Tapeworms

Tapeworms Can live in the digestive system, digestive tract, muscles, eyes, liver, lungs, or brain Symptoms: Digestive symptoms, abdominal pain, hunger, weight loss, worm in stool Example: Pork tapeworm Found in pork

Brucellosis Infectious Disease Caused by the bacteria in the genus Brucella Passed among animals Humans can become infected by coming in contact with a contaminated animal Symptoms: Fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, weight loss, and physical weakness Severe infections of the nervous systems or lining of the heart may occur.

Cysticercosis & Neurocysticercosis An infection caused by the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium Penetrate the intestinal wall and invade subcutaneous tissue, brain, eye, muscle, heart, liver, lung, and pertioneum When cysticerci are found in the brain, it is called neurocysticercosis Symptoms: Lumps under skin, blurry vision, retinal detatchment or swelling, seizures, headaches, confusion, sudden death

Trichinosis Parasitic Roundworm Migrate into muscles Caused by eating raw or undercooked pork Most common in areas where ham or sausage are eaten Symptoms: Stomachache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, eye bleeding, achy muscles and joints, fever, chills, thirst, hives, fatigue, difficulty swallowing

Diseases Pigs Get Influenza PMWS PRRS Swine Fever

Influenza Swine Flu A respiratory disease caused by type A influenza Most outbreaks occur in late fall and winter months Very common Swine flu viruses do not usually infect humans

PMWS & PCV2 “Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome” Causes illness in piglets Symptoms: Progressive loss of body condition, visibly enlarged lymph nodes, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, pale skin, and jaundice

Swine Fever A Virus also called CSF Hog Cholera Pig Plague Causes fever, skin lesions, convulsions, and usually death within 15 days
