Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes Emmitsburg, Maryland
History Created in 1875 by Father John Dubois There is a legend that he saw a mysterious light on the mountain and followed it to find the sacred spot of the Grotto
Elizabeth Ann Seton She came to the area in 1809 and loved the Grotto. It was “her most loved spot on the mountain” She references it in one of her letters, dated May 27, 1810
First Statue The first statue of Our Lady was placed in the Grotto in Mother Seton’s time.
The Grotto Today Today, the Grotto is down the road from Mount Saint Mary’s University. It is visited regularly by students and also tourists in the area.
