Ecuador is known for its fabulous exotic fruits, high quality fish and seafood, and the countless varieties of Andean potatoes. Across the country you'll find a broad selection of national and regional dishes, including lemon-marinated shrimp, toasted corn, and pastries stuffed with spiced meats. If you dare you can put your bravery to the test with roasted Cuy (guinea pig) or Tronquito (bull penis soup).

Music, parades, dressing up, beauty contests, dancing in the streets, drinking, feasting, bull fighting, cock fighting, firecrackers - the Ecuadorians love a good party and there's nothing like a fiesta to generate the right mood. For gringos, fiestas are a great opportunities to join in and have fun. Villages and towns all have their own festivals days, usually a local saint's day, while there are certain times of the year, notably Carnival in the days before Lent, when the whole country celebrates. Carnival takes place in the week before Lent, usually in February. This is the biggest festival in Ecuador. Frenzied water fights in which nobody is spared are an Ecuadorian specialty. The people of Cuenca in the south seem particularly fond of soaking each other. Instead, a festival of fruit and flowers takes place in Ambato in the last two weeks of February. On March 4, the annual Peach Festival is a wonderful sight to witness in Gualaceo, close to Cuenca.

The religion of Ecuador is Roman Catholic. Ecuador Religion is comprised mainly of Roman Catholic Christians. According to the CIA World Fact book, about 95% of Ecuadorians are Catholics. This was brought about by the colonization of the Spaniards in the 1800s. Ecuador WomenEcuador Women are devout to their faith. Today, you will see the influence of Catholicism throughout the country, with the old and new churches, to the holidays and other celebrations in the country.

Ecuador is a place of tradition and the skills involved in the art is passed from generation to generation. Ecuador Art depicts its rich culture and heritage along with the diversity. Amongst the local people there is hardly any difference between the fine arts and crafts. That is why most of the Ecuadorian Art is not only beautiful, but also has a practical use. Few of the city Arts are commercialized and are of poor quality, but the work available in the crafts markets in Otavalo or Salcedo, are genuine hand crafted goods, which are also inexpensive. Art of Ecuador includes quite a few things like the Panama Hat, which is being made there for more than hundred years. Ecuador Art also includes weaving, as the woven crafts of Ecuador are quite popular all around Ecuador. The craft of weaving was first brought to Ecuador by the Spanish, who capitalized the indigenous people for cheap labor.
