Getting Ready for Miami E-learning development Goal: Convert 30 hours of in-person to 15 hours of in- person/15 hours of online work Steps: 1) Define learning objectives 2) Generate a list of content that must be delivered in-person vs. online 3) For online work, decide on delivery method (pdf document, podcast, interactive, video, online discussion, games, etc.)

Getting Ready for Miami For online delivery elements, any solution needs to balance: Function (does it teach well, does it meet the goal of reducing in-person training) Design (the learner experience) Expense (how long will design take, how much will it cost) Design of online elements requires collaboration between: Content experts (CAC) Creative folks (CAC and Sparkworks) Technical programmers (Sparkworks)

Getting Ready for Miami Online elements: Where to begin CASA/GAL work is often about story telling Recommendation from Sparkworks: Online activities and learning opportunities based on fictional people and situations - Broad enough to encompass many ideas - Gives context for designers to generate content - Keeps things consistent – curriculum already does this

Activities that engage the learner with application/practice - there is danger in the idea that “all content is important” Activities that challenge the user to interpret and/or create meaning from information using a variety of senses (i.e. sight, sounds) Activities that ask the learner to interpret and create meaning from information based on the method of delivery or context (it’s not what you said but how or where you said it) Activities intended to break up time spent on less interactive content

Information that can be easily referenced later (chart outlining variety of drugs, information summarizing various laws) Content that varies state to state Activities that require immediate or constant subjective personal feedback Activities that require more than one user at a time

Getting Ready for Miami An online example: Current Curriculum: Values Activity (strongly agree, agree, etc.) Possible online activity: You are at a party and you overhear conversations in the room. The user is presented with a simple drawing of a floor plan and you see shapes representing different people. Dialogue balloons appear when you hover over a person with your mouse. You are asked to rank the comments you read/hear in the order you most Agree/Disagree with. User has the option of sending one person to the exit

Getting Ready for Miami Homework for “Session” groups: Review Session 1 materials to get a good idea on the format Beginning the week of 11/22, go to CAC wiki site (Blended Learning group tab) and look at the objectives for your session Get familiar with your case studies Begin to brainstorm which activities/information from the current curriculum would be a good fit for online “pre-work” for your session If you know of material that is not currently in the curriculum that would be a good fit, come prepared with it Do your statistics need updating? Optional: Meet with your groupmates (and Brian if you desire) prior to Miami to begin thinking about how you want to work together

Getting Ready for Miami Homework for “Case Study” group: Review Session 1 materials to get a good idea on the format If possible, meet with Brian before Miami meeting to get a better understanding for what will be needed in each case study Get familiar with Sessions 2, 3 and 4 on the wiki as well as each of the case studies
