Personalized Medicine Presentation by: Alex Wiki by: John and Lydia

Personalized Medicine Is… By definition, personalized medicine is medicine that is specifically tailored to a person dependent on their needs. This eliminates the risk of overmedication, poor reactions to medication and malicious side effects.

Types of Personalized Medicine: Pharmacogenomics Cancer Management Pharmacogenetics

What are the advantages of PM? Specific advantages that personalized medicine may offer: Ability to make more informed medical decisions Higher probability of desired outcomes thanks to better- targeted therapies Reduced probability of negative side effects Focus on prevention and prediction of disease rather than reaction to it Earlier disease intervention than has been possible in the past Reduced healthcare costs

What Can PM Be Used For? "Single cell" genetic diseases include : muscular dystrophy cystic fibrosis sickle cell anemia More complex diseases such as: Cancer Heart Disease Diabetes

Genomic: Could help determine a person’s risk of developing: – Cancer – Cardiovascular disease – Neurodegenerative diseases – Diabetes – Obesity – Neuropsychiatric disorders
