NExT New and Emerging Technologies Group April 2011 Update

Presentation Purpose  Information sharing  Make group aware of new technology process  Obtain feedback/thoughts on the process

About NExT  Emerged from Eservices discussions  Improve communication of new technology research  Provide mechanism to act on ‘what about tech x’  Don’t know what we don’t know technology  Process includes initial research and possibly testing  Outcomes are basic findings and information  Post NExT  Quarterly information sharing (or sooner if needed)  If adopted, then to the OPT/Project process for pilot

Information Sharing  Highlights

Considered Conceptcheckout gaming systems with games similar to laptop checkout using upcoming reservation system IT FINDINGS: SECURITY: ok - Focused on security to make sure data could be cleared between use which we were able to confirm can be done. PSS FINDINGS: TIME TO MANAGE: can be done but need to assess required support further if pilot is conducted. COLLECTIONS FINDINGS: LEGALITY/FEASIBILITY OF CIRCULATION: cleared, should not be an issue Gaming Systems

Ipads, Tablets…….. Considered Concept (Ipads, tablets, smartphones, handhelds, zoom…). Use of technology to support roving and operational efficiencies. Findings: There are many possible technical solutions to support staff roving. The current solution provided are the Izzy carts and other tablets have been discussed. HPLD needs to define need, benefit and then appropriate technology can be identified for testing.

Digitization of Materials Considered ConceptSupport for roving or staff operational efficiencies. IT FINDINGS: Technologies: tech exists to digitize but not necessarily manage the circulation process. Few (academic) libraries are pursuing. General observation is excessively complex and costly, look for economies of scale through larger partnerships/solutions. PSS FINDINGS: Patron impact: considerable questions about formats, use, … COLLECTIONS FINDINGS: LEGALITY/FEASIBILITY OF CIRCULATION: many existing questions and legal issues, currently very fluid subject

QR Codes Considered ConceptHow HPLD might use (and could we easily use) QR codes IT FINDINGS: Technologies: simple, easy to use tech to create (and apps to read) QR codes are readily available PSS FINDINGS: Patron uses: add to advertisements, materials to advertise free books to download, donate now and other immediate benefit services. COLLECTIONS FINDINGS: LEGALITY/FEASIBILITY OF CIRCULATION: considered as link to more information, related items via a HIP link but disregarded as too time intensive (and question interest) to be realistic solution.

Smartphones (pre process - status) Considered ConceptWhat phones should be used for HPLD IT FINDINGS: Droid easier to work with, Apple account is barrier. Interest in potential replacement for Digis and/or enhanced support. PSS FINDINGS: COLLECTIONS FINDINGS: Use for testing (without service) of download services

Moving Forward  Pending Technologies……  Present at future combined meetings Streaming video (DVDs) (week of 3.14) GIS and patrons (week of 3.14) Staff video creation and management Video and hpld Public printing via wireless squareup.com
