John Curran LACNIC 15 ARIN Update

2011 Focus IPv4 Depletion & IPv6 Uptake Developing, adapting, and improving processes and procedures Working hard to keep pace with increased v6 requests and more complex v4 and transfer requests Continue IPv6 outreach Implementation of new policies and services Continue development and integration of web- based system (ARIN Online) DNSSEC and RPKI deployment Continue participation in Internet Governance forums

Recovered Resources Jan 1, 2005 – Mar 31, 2011 /16 equivalents ASNs *Returned ,517 *Revoked ,635 *Reclaimed *Returned = Voluntarily by registrant *Revoked = For non-payment *Reclaimed = For fraud, misappropriation, or business dissolution

Recently Implemented Policy ARIN : Waiting List for Unmet IPv4 Requests – “ARIN will make each allocation and assignment as a single continuous range of addresses”, or, you can wait in line. – Unused space must be returned to ARIN ARIN : IPv6 Subsequent Allocation – “Subsequent allocations will also be considered for deployments that cannot be accommodated by, nor were accounted for, under the initial allocation.” Eg. 6rd. ARIN : Rework of IPv6 assignment criteria – Nibble boundary assignments based on site counts. Starts with /48 for one to twelve sites, then /44 for sites, etc. – “A site is a discrete location that is part of an organization’s network.”

Soon to be Implemented ARIN : Standardize IP Reassignment Registration Requirements – Expands “cable IPv4 allocation policy” to all ISPs with residential/DHCP-type customers (lowers utilization threshold, increases utilization information requirements). – Requires SWIP for /64 and larger static reassignments.

Draft Policy Discussions ARIN : Globally Coordinated Transfer Policy – Allows needs based transfers to/from ARIN region – AC postponed decision to work on the text ARIN : Better IPv6 Allocations for ISPs – Would enable ISPs to request larger blocks of IPv6 space on nibble boundaries – Last call recently ended ARIN : Reserved Pool for Critical Infrastructure – Reserves an IPv4 /16 for critical infrastructure – Last call recently ended

Draft Policy Discussions (cont.) ARIN : Shared Transition Space for IPv4 Address Extension – Allocates an IPv4 /10 for ISPs to share (eg. NAT444, like RFC 1918 address space) – Last call recently ended ARIN : Returned IPv4 Addresses – Instructs ARIN to quickly recycle address space in the ARIN region. – Last call recently ended And, about 15 new proposals

Public Facing Development Efforts ARIN Online development progressing steadily – major release in March 2011 DNSSEC – Interfaces to allow insertion of DS implemented – ARIN has signed all /8s it administers RPKI – Rolling out production service in Summer of 2011* – Pilot available at *Pending Board Approval

2011 Outreach Events Ongoing participation in various local, national and international forums, focus on IPv4 depletion and IPv6 adoption. Events include: – CES – Pacific Telecom Conference – Cable Labs – Joint Techs / Internet2 – ICT roadshow events – TTVN – IT Roadmap – Game Developers Conference – Enterprise Connect – Satellite 2011 – Rocky Mountain IPv6 Summit – Interop – CANTO – FOSE – HostingCON
