Module Introduction Intensive teaching week: Introduction to Computing Research: aims to briefly touch on all subjects that will be covered in more depth during the rest of the week Planning Research/Lab Sessions 1&2: The first steps in research, how to plan a research project, how to get started doing background research; Use lab sessions to conduct background research in Speech Recognition OR Machine Translation. Research Methodologies – theoretical research – applied research quantitative qualitative
Module Introduction Intensive teaching week (cont.): Presenting research (1) – in writing – orally Assessing research – self-assessment – evaluating research results – peer review for publication decisions for funding decisions
Module Introduction Intensive teaching week (cont.): Research in society context – legal issues; – social and ethical aspects. Presenting research (2)/Lab sessions 3&4: – 5 min presentation of the background research in Speech Recognition/Machine Translation you did in Lab Sessions 1&2; – use lab sessions to prepare presentations.
Module Introduction Online assignments: Aim: – to lead step by step towards completion of literature review, – while teaching key generic skills for compiling and critically assessing a bibliography for a literature review 7 individual assignments, each worth 3% of overall module grade (assignment 1 is 2%)

Module Introduction Online assignments: For each assignment: – submit assignment itself – 1 week later (assignment 5, 6 days later), submit peer reviews for assignment Submit on studentcentral – in the assignment drop box – in the wiki area for the given assignment
Module Introduction Online learning environment: lecture materials from intensive teaching week wiki-based peer learning environment: – all assignments can be viewed by all peers – 3 peer reviews per assignment – all reviews can be viewed by all peers – aim: learn from each other, get ideas how to do things better (and worse), help each other improve – greater responsibility than usual: must submit assignments and reviews on time, otherwise peers have disadvantage
