Mission Overview Our objective is to monitor and record: Beta and Gamma radiation levels. Component temperatures. Current draw. Acceleration. Orientation, location and altitude. Video of the entire flight. We expect to learn what current radiation levels are at different altitudes. We intend to learn how our satellite behaves in extreme climates. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College2

Mission Requirements RequirementMethodStatus The satellite must not exceed a weight of 1.5 kg.Design, Test The satellite must operate on 2W or less.Design, Test The satellite’s center of gravity (CG) shall be within 0.5” of the geometric central axis and below the horizontal axis. Design, Analysis Sensor data storage must not exceed 2GB.Design, Test Component heaters must maintain 15°C or better.Design, Analysis Components including battery charging ports and Arduino USB ports must be easily accessible. Design The satellite must be capable of meeting all mission objectives. Design, Test 6/29/11Fort Lewis College3

BalloonSat Chassis 6/29/11Fort Lewis College6

Initial Chassis Mock-Up Components affixed w/zip-ties to display scale (Arduino Mega & GPS shield mounted). Units will be mounted vertically along spine axis. Balloon cord to be routed through plastic tube terminated in machined teflon bushings top and bottom (not shown). Impact-absorbing outer shell will be a foam cylinder or sphere w/conical openings at top and bottom for camera/Geiger mounts. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College7

Subsystems Overview -Cameras -Record 1280x960 HD video of entire flight from five vantages. -Two facing up with a half-frame-rate staggered start to capture the balloon rupture. -Two facing horizontally to capture vistas. -One facing down. -Store video in 5 minute blocks. -Geiger Monitoring & Recording -Record to SD card shield every 10 seconds. -Self Monitoring -Record GPS, Temperature, heading and Voltages every 10 seconds. -Record Acceleration every 10 seconds initially, constantly after 80k feet. -Timing interval may depend on data storage capacity. -Data stored on GPS shield’s SD card. -Power -Minimum constant supply rating of 2W. -Heating -Maintain temperatures of 15°C ± 5°. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College8

Electrical Test Plans Freezer & Vacuum testing -Heaters, cameras, data storage, Geiger tube performance. -Battery longevity. -Heat dispersion & regulation. -Current draw monitoring. Ancillary Testing Materials -Arduino with data storage shield. -Dry ice or freezer. -Vacuum Chamber. Potential points of failure -Freezing. -Battery failure. -Data write errors. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College16

Mechanical Test Plans Whip it -Drop it on a rope, see what breaks. Drop it -Watch it fall, see what breaks. Pitch it -Throw it down the stairs, see what breaks. Potential points of failure -Fracture. -Separation. -Deflated ego. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College17

Conclusions Concerns –We’re still waiting on the Geiger tubes. –Need shielding for the high voltage supply. –Need lots of testing on heaters. Closing remarks –We’re looking forward to testing. –Some of the code is already complete. –Spray foam test runs have already been evaluated. 2 liter soda bottles work well for our desired shape and size. 6/29/11Fort Lewis College18
