The School of Medicine Research Roadmap Overview

Why a Research Roadmap? Responds to changing research landscape –Declines/shifts in funding priorities –Complex science needs collaboration, innovation, new multi-disciplinary models –Need for rapid translation of new knowledge –Evolving technology OHSU long-term research excellence requires strategic focus and prioritizing

What is the Research Roadmap? A broad framework to: –Position SOM for continued research success –Reflect and capture faculty perspectives –Develop methods for coordinated and strategic allocation of resources and investments –Reward collaboration and innovation –Enhance Graduate Studies program –Enable faculty/staff success (mentoring, process improvement, more)

How was the Research Roadmap developed? A year-long process Collaborative Research Leadership Group –~50 OHSU research leaders Six Task Forces developed recommendations All-School faculty survey

The six Strategic Initiatives 1.Identify and invest in areas of research strength that make best use of School of Medicine resources to advance human health and well-being. 2.Advance School of Medicine capacity in translational research. 3.Promote research excellence through effective organizational systems and infrastructure.

The six Strategic Initiatives 5. Enhance training, career development and mentoring opportunities for the next generation of biomedical researchers. 6. Promote, nurture and support a professionally rewarding culture for researchers at OHSU. 7. Increase awareness, appreciation and understanding of the value of research at OHSU to both internal and external stakeholders and the public.

What’s next? Begin “Blueprint” phase –Annual implementation plans –Metrics to ensure accountability, measure progress –Some recommendations already underway Establish Council for Research Strategies & Opportunities (CROS) –Oversee some aspects of implementation
