Pittsfield – from 100 years ago…

 Charted on July 29, 1781 and settled in  Most settlers were from either Connecticut or Massachusetts.  Reasons for settling town:  Suitable for grazing livestock  Lots of timber  Nearby rivers allowed creation of a sawmill and gristmill  In the 1870’s and 1880’s gold and magnetic sand could be found on the banks of the white river. Town History

 Current church was built in 1917 after fire destroyed former church  Original Congregational church built in  Due to lack of attendance Methodist and Congregational churches met under same roof.  When fire destroyed Congregational church, the only one left was the Methodist church.  The Methodist church was at the same site as the current Federated Church.  Built in 1836  Originally a primary school  Housed 35 students at first, increased to 60  Larger building was built in 1883  Sept. 8, 1973 building was named for Roger Clark  He was a former pupil who was killed in Vietnam. Roger Clark Memorial Library

 Built in 1792  Probably the oldest residential structure in Pittsfield.  Has been owned by the same family since it was built.  Used Colonial style elements in its design 17 Lower Michigan

 Built around the 1990’s  Because it was built so recently, not much in the way of documented history  Architectural elements used:  Spanish Coloniel style  Covered second floor porch  Similar to New Orleans buildings  New Orleans buildings use flat hip roofs  Casa Bella Inn uses a typical NE sloped metal roof.
