Problem statement  “dedicated tool set is still lacking” (Breure, 2010)  “lack of suitable open source tools for authoring an interactive publication and for reading or using it” (Thoma, 2006)  “clear obstacles for researchers to embrace EPs, extra effort is needed to add research data to a publication” (v/d Heuvel, 2010) 4

Research question What is the desirable functionality of an authoring tool for enhanced publications? 1. What are the properties of enhanced publications? 2. What tools are currently available for producing an enhanced publication? 3. Is there a match between properties and available tools? 5

SCOPE 16 Forge system which is designed to enable scientists to easily author, publish and edit scientific compound objects (OAI- ORE compliant) designed to streamline the process of adding interactive capability to the media objects by providing an easy and intuitive set of procedures, and where possible, through the use of wizards.

Open Journal Systems 17 DPubS Utrecht University is currently working on a project for Enhanced Publications, they are adapting OJS to make it work for publishing EPs open-source software system designed to enable the organization, presentation, and delivery of scholarly journals, monographs, conference proceedings, and other common and evolving means of academic discourse
