DOE Expectations for the ARIES Team Presented by: A. L. Opdenaker Fusion Energy Sciences Office of Science Doubletree Hotel Conference Center Bethesda, Maryland July 29, 2010

2 Thanks to all of you for coming to Washington in the middle of our infamous hazy, hot, and humid summer I am hoping that we can arrange to have at least one meeting every year at a location that is an easy train ride from Germantown so I can once again become involved in the great work you are doing

 Your efforts have been and continue to be greatly appreciated by the management of Fusion Energy Sciences  As we prepared for the FNS Meeting (Chuck will report), Ed Synakowski made many remarks about  quality of your work  confidence he has in team leadership  objective work based on science not influenced by organizational concerns, confinement concept bias, etc.  FES will continue to look to you to support us for special needs in the future FES View of the Studies Team 3

4  FES staff has been getting smaller  Five Long-Serving Staff members have recently retired  Two of three management positions remain vacant  The trend is about to start reversing!  Ed has been on-board for over one year  Research Division Director position will close in August  New Project Manager will report soon  Expect to have all positions filled be end of FY 2011  I encourage you to consider the open positions The Face of Fusion Energy Sciences Is Changing

5 Broad Programmatic Expectations  Expect FES management to be more scientifically savvy  Expect biggest programmatic need to be increase in scientific credibility of fusion  Expect credibility to enable a description of the requirements for energy development and the accompanying risks  Whatever else you may hear, next 20 years will be THE ITER ERA  Expect, in parallel, Fusion Nuclear Sciences Program  Expect Q~10 in ITER + FNSP results to allow national commitment to Fusion Development Plasma science Material science Control science Energy mission

 Continue/Complete current PMI efforts  Stretch out if required to support FNS  Participate in FNS planning as needed  Chuck will address possible areas of need  Possible Need to Re-Address DEMO Parameters  Do not worry--Whatever the expectations may turn out to be, the team will be busy Expectations of Studies Team 6

 Studies team must continue to remain flexible in order to respond appropriately to the current task before it. Team members will change to meet the needs  FNS group wants  table of commercial power plant characteristics, include  conservative to aggressive,  plasma and technology issues  iterate it with others in the FNS group  example of Technical Readiness Level Document 7
