2 nd Brainstorm session BH60A1101 Environmental Technology Project Work: Sustainable Innovation 5 ECTS cr Autumn 2011

Content of the second brainstorm session 1.Recap of the 1st BSS 2.Project themes: -Waste -Food -Sanitation and water 3.Auxiliary processes 4.Project work reflection

Recap of 1st BSS −What you thought about the first brainstorm session? Excluding the project work! Footer

Project themes: waste, sanitation, food DVD: How can we feed the world - Complexity and interlinking problems. An example of proving a holistic electricity system.

Brainstorm 1: Technology/process Step one: Choose a theme(s) (energy, waste, water, sanitation, food) in a group. Write simple technology/process solutions in the group Step two: rotate the paper every 1 minute!

Group brainstorm: Criteria Any technology/ solution that will be introduced to a developing country setting should fill the following criteria: SMART Simple Maintenance friendly Adaptable Reliable Timely to markets Also remember the three aspects of sustainability:

Auxiliary processes −Financing services for the BOP (bottom of the pyramid)? −Vouchers − -ICT-solutions -Crowdsourcing (receiving/diffusing information) (e.g. Winawa, ) -Providing services (market, weather information) -Concept: social entrepreneurship= form of business in which as equal as creating profit is to create social value.

Brainstorm 2: Auxiliary processes What innovation is missing from your project? What services does your project need? How will your solution reach the people? Gap filling technique: What do you need to get from A  B (A  C  D  …  B) Exaggeration: What if you would have to provide this solution to only 1 person? To 1000? 1 million? What changes?

Project work reflection -Suggestion: memos of meetings -Trouble of choosing the project work? -Other problems? -Possibility to concentrate on certain sectors (auxiliary) processes? Such as ICT-solutions. - Assistant’s approval needed! -Other areas group wants to concentrate on? -Each group reserves a time to meet the assistant weeks (50 possible if necessary)

Project work brainstorm for the group How could you develop a value adding system in a developing country? −Energy −Waste management −Agriculture/access-to-markets −Water and sanitation services What if you had plenty of resources? People, time, money.. Brainstorm with group, what kind of system you would develop? Technology, roles of different people, money flows.. Needs, problem, solution, resources, money, causes, results, culprits, challenges… Who, what, where, when, why, how? REMEMBER THREE CORE POINTS OF SHARED VALUE: Redefining 1)Products and services 2)Productivity in the value chain 3)Cluster development What innovation is missing from your project?
