4th grade note name unit

Grade: 4 Unit of Study: Treble Clef note names Standards: 1. Creative Expression Through Production – create, perform, exhibit, participate in the arts 2. Aesthetic Perception – students respond to, analyze, and make informed judgments about works in the arts Enduring Understandings: Students will understand that . . . Melodies are made up of rhythms and pitches. (add to knowledge gained from 3rd grade melody unit) There are several clefs which give notes names according to their place on the staff. Notes on the staff are like a road map for a musician; they tell us what to do. Music literacy is important in progressing as a musician. Essential Questions: What is a melody and how do I use melodies as a musician? What are the note names on a treble clef staff and why should I learn them? Why should I become musically literate? How will I use music in my future? Students will know . . . How to read and write notes on the treble clef staff. Students will be able to . . . Recognize notes on the staff by name: A, B, C… Write notes correctly on the staff. Play notes on the treble clef staff. Performance Task/Authentic Assessment: Note name pretest; group work in introducing treble clef staff and notes; whole group, small group and individual activities while practicing note names: singing, writing, creating. Stations: 10 stations incorporating activities with the goal of increasing note reading skills. Spider game at Halloween using note names, note name relays, note name bingo, other board games, computer sites. Rubric Criteria Summative assessment will take place later during the composition unit when they will be required to use their abilities reading, writing, and playing notes on the treble clef staff. This unit will be assessed on participation and effort – see attached rubric. Other Evidence of Students’ Learning: Success in playing recorder, success in sightsinging, success in composing

6 This is a partner activity. Get one felt staff board and a few note heads. (Or get the floor staff and use your body as a note head). One partner will be the quizzer and one person will be the creator. The quizzer will give the creator a note name and the creator will place the note head on the staff. The quizzer can certainly make it more challenging as needed, example: put a note head on the note which is two steps under line B, put a note head on the note an octave above Line E, etc...

8 Note name dominoes. Dealer shuffles all cards and passes seven out to each player, the rest of the cards go into a draw pile face down. Place the starting card in the center. Player who did not shuffle goes first. You are to place one of the cards in your hand next to one end of the starting card if you have a card that matches the same note as the starting card. If you don’t have the same note you must draw a card from the draw pile and the play goes to the next person. The person who runs out of cards first wins.

Therefore you will have seven pages in your book and may also have a cover if you choose. Each letter of the alphabet should be illustrated in a creative way, the illustration having to do with your theme (birds, flowers, insects, weather, breeds of dogs, etc…) and should be shown on the treble clef staff. Marker, colors, colored pencils, paper, scissors and other supplies are at the back of the room, if you need something which is not there please ask.
