 Found in tropical and subtropical regions  Areas with high temps and abundant precipitation  Climate causes high amounts of weathering  Results 

Entisols Ent ~ Recent. Characteristics Soils of recent development Highly resistant parent materials The exposed land surface is young, due to erosion.
Soils of Rangelands
Ultisols!!! Red clay soils. Very Similar to Alfisols However, they are highly weathered Low nutrient value Have undergone a great deal of leaching.
 Found in middle latitudes and prairie regions  Areas with moderate temps and precipitation  Organic decomposition is responsible for thick dark topsoil.

Where does soil come from?
Soil. Mechanical and chemical weathering of rocks form soil. Soil covers much of the land on Earth. It is made up of minerals, air, water, and organic.
Characteristics of Soil 5.2 Soil  Soil is part of the regolith that supports the growth of plants. Regolith is the layer of rock and mineral fragments.

Alfisols!!!!!!!!!!!!

Develop in semiarid to moist areas Primarily forested soils They have clay and nutrient rich sub-soils that hold and supply moisture and nutrients very efficiently for plants Can be very productive Easily eroded

Diagnostic Features Orchric Epipedon Contains Argillic Horizon Typical horizon: A, E, Bt, C Alfisols typically form in hardwood forests or mixed vegetative cover Alfisols are productive for most crops

Alfisols Make up 10% of the earth ice free land surface!

Alfisols Support about 17% of the Worlds Population!!!!!
