CHAPTER THREE EARLY PEOPLE OF OHIO Mrs. Meranto and Mrs. Urmson

Vocabulary that we need to know!  Say it!  extinct  artifact  history  prehistory  band  flint  atlatl

extinct to die out, not exist any more. Ex. Mastadons became extinct 10, 000 years ago.

artifact Objects used by people long ago.

history  The written story of the past.

Pre-history The time before written records.

band  Small group to which some Native Americans belonged.

flint  A kind of hard rock used for making tools and points for arrows and spears.

atlatl  A wooden stick used in pre-historic to throw a spear.

archeologist  A scientist who studies the way people lived in the past, including prehistoric.

Beringia  A land bridge believed to have connected Asia with North America for about 2,000 years during the Ice Age.

Lesson 2

culture  The way of life shared by a group of people, including language, beliefs, music, foods, and holidays.

religion  The way people worship the God or gods they believe in.

barter  To trade things for other things without using money.

shaman  A religious leader who is believed to heal the sick, tell the future, and control events.

Great Serpent Mound  A Native American built Hill in southern Ohio shaped like a giant, curling snake.

Fort Ancient  Mounds built by Hopewell people near present day Lebanon.

Lesson 3

trading post A store in an unsettled area where trading and bartering are done.

lick  A natural salt deposit.

longhouse  A long wooden building in a Native American village that might house as many as 60 families.

wigwam  A rounded Native American hut in which just one family lived.

teepee  A temporary cone shaped dwelling made with poles and grass mats used by Native Americans.

council  A group of people who meet to talk and make decisions.
