Interesting Facts In the 1660s New York City's “skyline” was dominated by a two-story-high windmill. New York City's most famous landmark, the Statue of Liberty, is constructed out of copper and eventually turned green due to pollution from coal burning factories. Tourism in New York City includes nearly 47 million foreign and American tourists each year. New York State has 1,300 museums and galleries, 64 performing arts centers, and 230 theaters. 2
