EDC&I 585 5/18/11 What’d We Talk About Last Week? Organizing Our Discussions for This Week Setting the Stage for Next Week

Last Week We Said… Kelly (pt. 1) – “Deep progress” as reflected in technology; contributes to progress and human betterment “overall” – Can we really attribute autonomy to technology? Argument seems strong, but hard to believe – Technology seems to proceed via “kludging” – lots of small improvements, that incorporate, build on existing systems

Some other stuff we didn’t touch on… Technology & information: A mutual dependence (each shapes the other) Exotropy: Increase in order or information flow; the technium supports it; science as an example “Paradox of improbable inevitabilities”: life is complex, but more constrained than our imagination “Inverted pyramid of invention”: Only a few new technologies get adopted; lots of co-invention Curves of technological development: Moore’s, Kurzweil’s laws; doubling times, etc.

Misc NEXT WEEK: ISIS! See sent on 5/17; I’ll send again early next week Be on time!! (We’ll be there only 4:30-5:30) We’ll come back to Miller to do presentations after ISIS visit Thanks, Jason! (Comments…) LATER TONIGHT: Course evals

Questions Kelly (pt. 2) How well have we done (say, over last 90 years) in shaping how technology gets used in education? (cf. KK p. 181) Has technology facilitated latitude or freedom in its typical uses in education to date? (cf. KK, p. 208) Are we applying the right proactionary principles (KK p. 255) to thinking about how to use technology in education? Technology’s exotropic trends (KK, p. 270 ff.): Which is technology fostering in education? Which should it be fostering?

And the BIG question: If KK is right, what will education look like in 30 years?

For next week (5/25)… Look at the ISIS site in preparation for our visitISIS site – Under “Curriculum,” read through the list of Simulators to see what they’re working on/with – Work through 1-2 of the Surgery Basic Skills modules (Adobe Presenter) – Read their Annual Report from
