What is this “Cloud Computing”?  Cloud computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand  It describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on the Internet,

 The term "cloud" is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network  A key element of cloud computing is customization and the creation of a user-defined experience.

Where It All Began  The concept of cloud computing dates back to 1960s, when John McCarthy opined that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility".  In the 90’s it was called “utility computing”.

Recent Past  In 2007, Google, IBM, and a number of universities embarked on a large scale cloud computing research project  By mid-2008, Gartner saw an opportunity for cloud computing "to shape the relationship among consumers of IT services, those who use IT services and those who sell them”.

Cloud Computing Relationship  Clients v. Providers  What are the needs of the clients?  How do the providers meet the needs of the clients?

Client  Clients want services  On average, they don’t have to know what’s going on behind the scenes  3 main wants:  Storage  Applications  Infrastructure

Client (cont)  Why cloud computing?  Elasticity (scaling up and down)  Automatic deprovisioning  Pay for what you use  Don’t have to worry about IT services and maintenance  Outsourcing?

Provider  Provide the hardware, networks, storage, and interface to deliver computing as a service  Data centers bring together hardware and software to provide services  Provides platforms to assist the deployment of applications to users  Responsible for security (Pepsi v. Coke)

Storage  Commercials  Large data centers  Clients buy or lease storage capacity  Their information is then shown as a virtual server  Could actually span multiple physical servers  Clients manage the space themselves

Types of Clouds  Public  Hybrid  Private

Public  Services are provided to the public through the internet  Good for SaaS – Software as a Service  Cheap due to the fact that you pay for what you use  Can be scaled to meet the needs of the users  Concerns: Security and reliability

Private  Applies primarily to services hosted from within an organization’s data center  Significantly reduces the security risks of the public cloud model (control)  The user still has to buy, build and manage the system though  Why do this?

Hybrid  Incorporates both internal and external providers (combination of Public and Private)  Attempt to streamline the cloud  Have to track multiple security platforms  vSphere Enterprise Plus

Issues with Cloud Computing  Reliability on Internet Connectivity  Personal Privacy  Cost  Security  Ownership  Performance Concerns

Reliability on Internet Connectivity  When you are reliable on the internet, the second you lose your connection you are without all of your information on the network.  This poses big problems on a company that is dependent on a cloud network for operations.

Personal Privacy  Privacy is an issue with Cloud Computing.  Companies providing the service can easily monitor what its clients are communicating and storing.  This can lead to many legal problems for the providers.

Costs  If customers purchase games or applications through cloud computing, they may pay more for monthly subscriptions than actual ownership.

Security  Customer data is of great concern with Cloud Computing.  Some argue that customer data is much more secure when it is dealt with internally.  Providers must take their customers security serious if they want loyal customers.

Ownership  Businesses that store their data through cloud computing release ownership of their information to a third party.  This raises problems in security, costs, and reliability as well.

Performance Concerns  Potential Providers are concerned with the performance and availability of applications within the cloud  They are also concerned with the server shutting down for legal and financial reasons. The business aspect of Cloud Computing appears to be a high risk.

Cloud Computing Future, Benefits  Open Cirrus  Research initiative, funding includes:  sponsors (HP, Intel, Yahoo)  partners (i.e. IDA, UIUC, KIT, MIMOS, ETRI, RAS)  research members (who will use the testbed)  NSF  Educational purposes  Software available to all students

Cloud Computing Future, Benefits  Cloud backup  Elastic and scalable  Cloud gaming  Majority of game is on server, while game is streamed while accessing server  Key will be to decrease lag time, dependence on internet high speed internet connections and low processing units  Mobile devices  HP Labs India announced SiteonMobile for emerging markets of low end devices
