Computer Networks An Overview

A Computer Network!

Some Network Terminology LAN WAN WiFi ETHERNET INTERNET World Wide Web

Definitions LAN -Local Area Network WAN – Wide Area Network WiFi = Wireless Fidelity ETHERNET – Most common system today of hardware and software and protocols for making networks INTERNET – A global INTERconnection of NETworks

Protocols The RULE and Conventions to allow for communication between computers Implemented in SOFTWARE Required by HARDWARE (routers and servers) Lots of them at different levels

Networks Private – like in a business or an office or at home Public – like the Internet or MSN

Some Application Protocols SMTP – simple mail transport portocol (used for ) POP – Post Office Protocol (delivers mail like an ordinary letter ie to your “mailbox”)

Transport Protocols Rules for delivering the coded messages that are in computer network communications TCP – Transmission Control Protocol IP v4 and IP v6 – the rules for uniquely identifying individual users on the internet. (billions of unique adresses)
