Webinar Re-cap What You Don’t Know Could Hurt Your Next Career Move Amy McAuliffe Cooper, ONWARD Career Advisor MBA, CPRW (Certified Professional Resume Writer) Content source: September 22, 2010 FREE webinar Speaker: Donna Fedor, Founder, The Re-THINK Program ( Facilitator: Jill Konrath, CEO/Author, Get Back to Work Faster, (

About the Speaker, Donna Fedor Professional Results Coach who specializes in helping people shift their thinking to produce results for personal and business success. 15 years recruiting and 16 years retail management, Donna has been recognized as a strong people person, inspiring others to be the best they can be. Founder, The Re-THINK Program –

Donna’s Opening Comments Glimpse the power you hold within. Filter out negative thinking by re-framing your thoughts and unleash your inner power. Set intentions (specific purpose) so that you get what you expect. With an intention, we achieve better results. Share “golden nuggets” with others…pay it forward. Take notes, and share with others what you learn.

Re-THINK means to Choose Better Thoughts Y ou are the Director of your Thoughts Power of thought – deliberately think the best thoughts, LIFE is SUPPOSED to be FUN Give up the right to be anything other than great Discard thoughts like in poker, pick fresh (new) cards when you are dealt a bad hand (negative thoughts) Ask yourself: “What thoughts would bring you closer to what you want?” BREAKTHROUGH THINKING changes the future you are living Wake up and think What’s Possible? Think Possibility versus concern and create changes in your life.

10 Mistakes That Could Hurt Your Career 1.Ineffective Networking 2.Only Using Job Boards 3.Low Self-Confidence 4.Too Many Job Targets 5.Losing Your Motivation 6.Lack of Interview Preparation 7.Not Fully Understanding Your Value 8.Not Putting Velocity In Your Search 9.Follow Up Procedures 10.Choosing “Wrong” Career

1. Ineffective Networking Networking is the best way to your next job and most people are not building a sufficient network Learn to be visible … say hello, do not be invisible! Have an intention for your network – an intention could be adding 2 contacts daily to your connections. Once you find a job, continue to build your network throughout your career. Form lifelong relationships with people who are well networked. If needed, get coaching to help you succeed at networking. VCP = Visibility, Credibility, Profitability: if you are Visible and Credible with your network, Profitability results.

2. Only Using Job Boards Over 50% of jobs are never advertised Highest level of competition with the lowest return for time invested View the job boards as one of many strategies and tools to use in job search Targeting specific companies and individuals is a more effective means to land your next job.

3. Low Self-Confidence Real limitations versus self-imposed limits results in under-utilized potential. – Our self-imposed limits are usually greater than our real limitations Push out the boundaries to realize your Peak Potential – Stretch yourself to believe you CAN do it, it IS Possible Each of us wants the experience of living our life unrestricted by (artificial) self-imposed limits

4. Too Many Job Targets You will not find a job by applying to every available position and hoping the next job lands in your lap RE-THINK – select certain targets and focus your resume and cover letter to address the target – If you have more than one target, track which resume and cover letter you have submitted to avoid confusion

5. Losing Your Motivation It is hard to face rejection daily; however, rejection is part of every job. Do not let it get you down or you will never find a job. If you want to be successful, RE-THINK. Maintain a positive attitude despite results to find the YES and endure the No. No = nothing so move on.

6. Lack Of Interview Preparation The purpose of an interview is to eliminate your competition by auditioning not interviewing. – You can never be over-prepared or over-practiced for an interview – Ask 5 people in your life, “What are the top 5 reasons to hire me?” Do they agree with how you view your value? Don’t interview like you are reading your resume. Focus on accomplishments and results you have achieved.

7. Not Fully Understanding Your Value Value Statement – communicate the value you bring to an organization, to the hiring manager, to your network and to the people in your life. You are unique and bring certain qualities that you can use to solve company problems.

8. Not Putting Velocity In Your Search Velocity = rate of speed with which something happens, rapidity of action or reaction Full time job is your job search if you are currently unemployed! – Segment each day to allow time for research, contacting new targets, submitting resumes and following up. – Set minimum standards and focus on bite-size goals daily and you will achieve faster results

9. Follow Up Do not make up reasons why you are not being called back. Call and find out! Make NO EXCUSES to not call back your contacts. Be polite and continue to follow up unless informed you are no longer in consideration for the role (then you can stop calling).

10. CHOOSING a “Wrong” Career Be sure to assess your interests and choose the RIGHT career before you start your search process…an exercise: – Make 2 columns – On left, list Tasks You Do Not Wish to Perform – On right, list Tasks You Enjoy Doing Seek a job based on the life you want (value your passion and purpose)

Donna’s Three Keys to Success 1.Networking 2.Self-confidence 3.Strategy for Support – It is critical to surround yourself with support while you are searching (family, friends, other job hunters, etc, can provide strength on down days) Positive gets more done, is open, sharper and more intelligent than negative
