Presentation transcript:

1.1 Chemistry “What is Chemistry?” Objectives: 1. Define chemistry 2. Identify the 5 areas of chemistry 3. Identify reasons to study chemistry

Inquiry Activity – Solid or Liquid Materials: mix a small amount of water with the cornstarch in your cup (it should be like plaster). Use your fingers to mix the components together. Think About it… 1. What happened when you slowly pushed your finger into the mixture? 2. Roll your mixture into a ball with both of your hands. What happened when you released the ball? 3. Build a vertical tower figure. Then release your mixture. What happens? 4. What one factor seems to determine whether the mixture behaves as like a solid or a liquid?

I. What is Chemistry? A. Def – In response to God’s cultural mandate, we as Christians study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes, while giving all praise and glory to Him. B. Areas of Chemistry 1. Organic Chemistry (carbon based) 2. Inorganic Chemistry (all non-carbon based) 3. Biochemistry (life chemistry) 4. Analytical Chemistry (analyzing chemicals) 5. Physical Chemistry (principles and laws)

C. Why study Chemistry. Read Genesis 1:26-31 “God’s Mandate for us” 1 C. Why study Chemistry? *Read Genesis 1:26-31 “God’s Mandate for us” 1. As a Christian we can and are called to study God’s marvelous creation. 2. Preparing for a career 3. Being an informed citizen 4. Natural curiosity 5. Chemistry is fun! 6. More???

Name__________ Period _________ 1. 1 #’s 1-4 1 Name__________ Period _________ 1.1 #’s 1-4 1. Explain why chemistry affects all aspects of life and why it is important to study. 2. List the 5 traditional areas of chemistry. 3. List 3 reasons for studying chemistry. 4. Would a geologist ask a biochemist to help identify the minerals in a rock? Explain your answer.
