ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO2 OUTLINE Lab Syllabus Policies Safety Report Submission Tour of Lab

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO3 Contact Information Instructor: Dr. Jorge Alvarado –Office: THOM 117E Phone: (979) – TA: Mr. CHUN-WEI YAO –Office: THOM 008 –

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO4 Lab Topics WeekTopic 1Lab introduction, safety and rules 2Fluid Properties measurements – Viscosity and specific gravity 3Pressure measurement and gauge calibration 4Flow measuring devices 5Fluid Friction and pressure loss 6Introduction to pumps and Pump efficiency I 7Cavitation and Centrifugal Pump Efficiency 8Fan Efficiency 9Basic hydraulic circuit diagrams and valves 10Hydraulic circuit diagrams and valves – Part 2 11Actuator construction and hydraulic component identification 12Pneumatic systems

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO5 Policies Attendance and Punctuality: –Lab attendance is mandatory. –Labs will start on time. –Absent students will get no credit for lab report. –Students arriving up to 10 minutes late, will get a 10% deduction of lab report grade. After 10 minutes, no credit. –Special cases: case-by-case basis

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO6 Policies Lab Reports: –One report per team. –Submit reports on time. –Submit a hard copy signed by each member of team. –All lab reports should be printed on white A4 pages. –All lab reports are due one week after the lab session. –Late reports will not be accepted.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO7 Policies Lab Teams: –Teams of 3 or 4 members. –Students should send an to TA with the name and address of each team member. –Changing teams is allowed with the express consent of instructor. –Each team member should assume an equal portion of the lab and report writing tasks.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO8 Lab Safety - Rules Always wear safety glasses. Always wear covered shoes (sandals are not acceptable). Always wear pants.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO9 Lab Safety - Rules Do not turn on any equipment unless with the consent of the instructor or lab TA. Learn the location of all safety equipment. Absolutely No Smoking, eating, or drinking in the laboratory. Clean your area at the conclusion of each experiment.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO10 Lab Safety Use your common sense. Be aware that you are working with potentially dangerous equipment. In case of emergency: –Call 911 (9-911 from a campus phone) and have the following information ready: Your name Location Specific information about the incident. –Be familiar with the evacuation routes. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO11 Lab Reports - Experiments All reports must contain the following: –Title Page: It should include the title of the experiment, team member’s name, and date. –Objective: short statement of the purpose of the experiment. –Introduction: explanation of the problem giving the reader enough background. –Procedure: description of the experimental setup and steps followed during the experiment (a schematic drawing of the experiment is desired). –Findings: summary of the data of the experiment, it could be in the form of tables, figures, graphs. –Conclusions: interpretation of the results explaining how the objectives were accomplished. –Answers to Questions in lab manual.

ENTC 303PROF. ALVARADO12 Lab Reports-Tips Keep it simple Be concise Cited your sources Proof read tables, figures, graphs
