 any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division.  It may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.

 GENES  CIGARETTE SMOKING  SECONDHAND SMOKE  SUN AND UV EXPOSURE

 A symptom is a signal of disease, illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body  Fever  Extreme tiredness (fatigue)  Weight loss  Yellowing in the eyes  Jaundice  Headaches  Changes in a mole

 As cancer progress it starts a new stage  Stage 0 Carcinoma(Cancer) is the first stage and the least dangerous  Stage I- cancer is only in one part of the body  Stage II- cancer is slowly advancing  Stage III- cancer is advancing even more  Stage IV- cancer has spread to other places in the body via the blood stream

 There are over 100 different forms of cancer in the world. These are the most common types:  Lung Cancer  Prostate Cancer  Breast Cancer  Lymphoma  Colon Cancer  Uterine Cancer  Leukemia(cancer of the blood)  Skin Cancer  Bladder Cancer

 Cancer effects everyone who is involved; the sick and their family.  Although different cancers effect different people  Breast cancer is most common in women and is very rare in men  Prostate cancer only effects men since women do not have a prostate gland  Uterine cancer only effects women because men do not have uterus’  Leukemia(blood cancer) mostly effects children

 SURGERY- physical removal of cancerous cells  RADIATION THERAPY- high energy rays destroy cancer cells  CHEMOTHERAPY- anti-cancer medication  HORMONE THERAPY- one’s own hormones are manipulated to cure the cancer  IMMUNOTHERAPY- using one’s own immune system to fight the cancer

 I’m a nursing student here at Western Michigan University  One day I plan to work in a hospital with cancer patients  It’s my dream to help people with disease and let them know that someone cares and wants to help them through this hard time
