Clear recognition of The need to work together Financial and moral imperative The potential opportunities to be realised Do more together than any sector or organisation can alone The challenges of making it happen Given experiences of the past The uncertain times ahead

So where does this leave the advice sector With a sizeable leadership challenge! Managing the here and now, BUT maintaining the status quo, is not an option The future will require Vision Influence Change

The sector faces ‘Wicked Issues’.... Difficult and ever-changing Cross-cutting – likely to affect, and be affected by other problems Deeply embedded Have a high social and financial cost Have a high profile politically Hot topics for local people and communities The solution to which is likely to cut across professional, organisational and sector boundaries

Wicked problems - the challenge Wicked problems: Need clumsy solutions Need high levels of connectivity Need positive deviance & constructive dissent Are essentially unique and novel – solutions need to emerge Have no set solutions No right or wrong, just better or worse Adapted from: Grint, K. (2008) Wicked Problems and Clumsy Solutions’ Clinical Leader 1(2) Informal Networks (2009) available at:

Embracing the challenge Establishing shared goals Building trust – within and between hierarchies. Exchanging information and other resources Embracing emergence Exploring new territory Creating new knowledge In order to create change enabled organisations Adapted from: Informal Networks (2009) available at:

Change Enabled Organisations Forward looking and clear sense of direction Awareness of real external and internal environments Risk acceptable Value people Challenge existing practice Flexible and responsive Continually increases capacity to innovate and learn

Is the leadership challenge is to ask, how we can enable people to... Have better information to guide their decision making Engage in multiple, collaborative interactions with colleagues Network more effectively Feel safe to develop and try innovative, new ideas with colleagues Learn and develop through doing rather than just taking in information Essentially leaders need to act as enablers, facilitators & coaches – to ask the right questions rather than provide the right answers

OUTCOMES (Vision) PROCESS (Change) CLIENT (Values) RELATIONSHIP (Influence)

Pause for Thought! “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Henry Ford(American industrialist and pioneer of the assembly-line production method, )

The Workshops To help explore how we ( and I include HE in this through research, education and consultancy!) can do just that!
