Helping Youth Cruise to Excellence – Recognition and Development in the 4-H Program May 13, 2011 Presented by: Kevin Wright, State 4-H Program Manager, Washington State University Extension

Welcome! –Who are you? –Where are you from? –What do you do? –Why did you come to this workshop?

Why Recognize youth? Everyone needs to be recognized Positive recognition brings about positive behaviors & attitudes Recognition is a process not an event Adults and youth change over time so recognition needs to change also. Recognition is varied to meet varied personalities Youth become active in 4-H because they benefit personally not because it is a good program

National 4-H Recognition Model

Participation: Importance of acknowledging involvement in 4-H educational experiences. This can be the first step towards building positive self concept

Progress Toward Self-Set Goals: Helping youth set realistic goals. Recognition for progress toward self-set goals, no matter how small, is an integral part of this type of recognition.

Achievement of Standards of Excellence: Gives youth an external pre- determined target for learning experiences to give insight into their own efforts and abilities.

Peer Competition: Peer competition is a part of the model for recognition. This type of recognition subjectively identifies, in a concrete time and place, the best team or individual.

Cooperation: Learning and working together promotes high achievement. May take advantage of all the skills of the group, as well as the process used to approache the learning task/goal. Everyone is rewarded.

For recognition to be significant, it must: Be timely Be in front of peers Be beneficial
