Helping Youth Cruise to Excellence – Recognition and Development in the 4-H Program May 13, 2011 Presented by: Kevin Wright, State 4-H Program Manager, Washington State University Extension

Welcome! –Who are you? –Where are you from? –What do you do? –Why did you come to this workshop?

Why Recognize youth? Everyone needs to be recognized Positive recognition brings about positive behaviors & attitudes Recognition is a process not an event Adults and youth change over time so recognition needs to change also. Recognition is varied to meet varied personalities Youth become active in 4-H because they benefit personally not because it is a good program

National 4-H Recognition Model

Participation: Importance of acknowledging involvement in 4-H educational experiences. This can be the first step towards building positive self concept

Progress Toward Self-Set Goals: Helping youth set realistic goals. Recognition for progress toward self-set goals, no matter how small, is an integral part of this type of recognition.

Achievement of Standards of Excellence: Gives youth an external pre- determined target for learning experiences to give insight into their own efforts and abilities.

Peer Competition: Peer competition is a part of the model for recognition. This type of recognition subjectively identifies, in a concrete time and place, the best team or individual.

Cooperation: Learning and working together promotes high achievement. May take advantage of all the skills of the group, as well as the process used to approache the learning task/goal. Everyone is rewarded.

What are different ways you recognize youth in 4-H?

For recognition to be significant, it must: Be timely Be in front of peers Be beneficial

Awards vs. Recognition What's the difference?

Kohlberg’s Six Stages of Moral Development 1.Obedience and Punishment Orientation (I Don’t Want to Get in Trouble) 2.Individualism and Exchange (I Want a Reward) 3.Good Interpersonal Relationships (I Want to Please Somebody) 4.Maintaining the social order (I Follow the Rules) 5.Social Contract and Individual Rights (I am Considerate of Other People) 6.Universal Principles (I Have a Personal Code of Behavior and I Follow It)

How does a Youth’s Developmental Stage Affect the Way we Recognize them?

How do the 4-H Recognition Model, Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and Positive Youth Development overlap?

I Don’t Want to Get in Trouble I Want a Reward I Want to Please Somebody I Follow the Rules I am Considerate of Other People I Have a Personal Code of Behavior and I Follow It
