SM 4140 Graduation Thesis Ho Tze Ki, kiki Adviser: Linda Lai Performance

Background In Hong Kong one day tour, the travel agencies provide well-planned schedule and arrangement for the tourists to follow, like transportation, meal, places to visit, activities, e.t.c. Tour guide is the one who tell the stories, histories and information about the scenic spots.

As one of the participants, tourists follow what they provide for them but lacks of activeness in deciding what to do in the tour. It seems that both the travel agencies and tour guide flamed what should we do and know in the tour. There is no doubt that this state may happen in our life but is it absolutely all be that? Will there be any alternative? Some questions are raised.

Under this kind of tour, what characters are those participants playing? what will they perform? How does it affect the tour and the participant’s experience? Are there any characters exit?

Research method 1)Field Study 4 Hong Kong 1 day tours  main focus X times to inquiry information in travel agencies 2) Textual analysis in introduction leaflets

Field study 4 HK 1 day tours 1)

Tour Guide 1234 Peggy Middle- aged woman Social worker? Firemen? Tourists? One liter Middle- aged man ?(no name) Middle-aged woman What did they do? 1)Gather 2)Explanatio n 3)Moderate the atmospher e Peggy Social worker Tourists One liter?(no name) PeggyFiremen Tourists One liter Tourists ?(no name) Tourists PeggyFiremen Tourists Social worker One liter Tourists ?(no name) Tourists Findings: 1) There is more than one tour guide in a tour 2) The roles are exchangeable

Tour Guide 1234 What did they say? Myth (natural environment) side-street news Official information (natural environment) Advisement Official information (fire station) Personal feeling and experience Official information (Hong Kong development and constructions) Myth (natural environment) Official information (estate) Who say?Peggy Tourists? Firemen Tourists One liter Tourists ?(no name) Tourists Where? In the boat (passing through) In the station and ship In the bus On location In the bus

Tour Guide Findings 1)Questioning the role of tour guide again 2)Besides tour 2, all the guide don’t say any personal feeling about the place. First hand Third hand 3) The role of the speaker and the place that we visit will affect the stories, information, stories we hear in the tour.

Tourists 1234 Total no. : groups : Background : from hk 12 from china 31 7 All live in the same district 10 children from hk 5 from china from hk 2 from china 12 from Singapore Reasons of joining 1)Hail non- resident friends 1)Holiday (want to see the real things) 2)Study (as a anti-fire ambassador) 3)Have the same Experience b4 (want to revise the experience) 1)Price is reasonable 2)Go with family 3)well- planned 4)Hail non- resident friends 5)revisit 1)Price is reasonable 2)Kill time 3)Travel 4)Revisit 5)Free of charge

Tourists Relation ship between I and the others No Go with my friend No interaction But polite in lunch (eat in the same table) Not bad Go with my father I actively talk and smile with the others All come from the some district (some may live near by  more talking topics) Not bad Go with my father I actively talk and smile with the others but I show my purpose this time some of them are act unnatural Young people are easy to communicate with Good Go by myself People are curious about me They treat me as a little girl I actively talk and smile with the others I share some candies with them

Tourists Findings: 1)Although there are different reasons to come, the tours intentionally have expectation on the tour  fulfill their desires and want 2)the no. of joined people and the member in each groups affect a lot in the tour If everyone join alone, the situation will totally different

Tourists What did they do in the tour? Activities that assigned in the leaflet/not assigned Taking-photo *** Transportation *** Listening /not *** Eating *** Taking *** *** - tourists may do 2-3 activities at the same time - all of them go with family or friends, they have other role and will do related actions at the same time, like parent, son, lovers…… - Taking seem assessable in any activities - tourists may not listen to tour guide’s saying - some unassigned visiting place will appear subtly --> toilet

Participants as actors Tour as fiction what the actors performance and what will happen in the tour as rituals that repeated in many 1 day tours But under this routine, some alternatives exist If it have alternatives, how do we artiacular them? How do it affect the tour, the participant's role and their experience?

Final work In response to this finding and question, I will create tours that refers to my research findings To open up more possibilities and discussion about the role of participants and their experience The tours are continue performance,

Prototype I am still thinking but have some ideas If I have one more days, I may finish this part Remarks: Places, formats, what the participants do in tour………….

Evaluation The first draft of the tour should be finish with in the Easter hoilday The first tour should be hold on the end of March Big struggles: 1)Where should I visit? 2) What is relationship between the visiting place and participants?
