The Christian Measure of True Happiness

The Beatitudes The teachings of Jesus of the Sermon on the Mount on the meaning of and the way to true happiness.

A Comparison The Beatitudes The Ten Commandments Teach us about our goals in life as Christians Build up the kingdom of God Offer hope in times of trouble Helps us to think about our attitudes, so that they reflect the love of God above everything else Teach how to love God and love our neighbors in a specific set of laws

Beatitude Saints  Are people who take the Beatitudes’ message to heart and try to live by them.

The Hard Sayings of Jesus  Teachings such as the Beatitudes and The Last Judgment parable overturn common held values and priorities. The Gospels are loaded with many “hard sayings “ of Jesus.

The Hard Sayings of Jesus Luke 6: “Love your enemies…” “…do good to those who hate you…” “…bless those who curse you…” “…pray for those who mistreat you…”

Hard Sayings of Jesus  “From the person who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other one as well…”  “…From the one who takes what is yours, do not demand it back…”

The Hard Sayings of Jesus  The hard sayings create a tension in anyone who attempts to take them seriously.  The Catholic moral life also leads to suffering sometimes.  But as the beatitudes and the Resurrection prove that suffering does not have the final say!
