GHSGT Review Review terms and concepts Week #1

List of Terms  Chemistry  Biology  Ecology  Homeostasis  Metabolism  Eukaryotic  Prokaryotic  Solution  Heterogeneous  Homogeneous

Chemistry  The study of the composition, structure, properties, and interactions of chemicals (matter).  Ex) biochemistry, organic  nuclear, analytical chemistries

Biology  The study of the structure, functions and processes of life.  Ex) medicine, genetics, taxonomy, ecology…..

Ecology  The study of interrelationship of organisms and their environments  Ex) global warming energy efficiency, resource use

homeostasis  a relatively stable state of equilibrium. (Ex. Body shivers to warm it up; Buffers in the blood to maintain pH)

metabolism  chemical changes in cells where energy is generated for the cells (and body's) processes Ex) slow/fast, sick=unbalanced

eukaryotic  cells containing nuclei and organelles  Ex) skin, heart, bone, muscle

prokaryotic  unicellular w/o nucleus and membrane-bound organelles  Ex) bacteria

solution  A homogeneous mixture made of a solute and solvent- even (uniform) throughout  Ex. Sugar water, metal alloy

heterogeneous  mixture made of a solute and solvent- uneven throughout  Ex. Cereal, concrete, pizza

homogeneous  Another name for solution- where parts are evenly distributes (solute/solvent)  Ex) tea, salt water, gold jewelry
