 Greek name: Zeus  Roman name: Jupiter  Parents: Cronus and Rhea  Sphere of influence: The sky, weather, law, order and fate  Attributes: Attributes of Zeus include a lightning bolt, royal scepter, and eagle.  Birthplace: in the Diktaion cave on Mount Ida on the island of Crete Aurelia Felix, hora IV

In this statue of Zeus, he has a very powerful and elegant aura around him. He is sitting in a throne with an eagle in his right hand and his scepter in his left. I imagined that many Romans during the Olympics would worship this statue in the Sanctuary of Zeus. When I first saw this image, it gave me a deep first impression of Zeus. He hit me as a god who knew how to rule his people (and how to work out :D). I chose this in the end because it is one of the few ancient images of Zeus that I could find. Although it no longer exists, I still find the statue absolutely amazing. This statue was built in Olympia in 433 BCE by the famous sculptor Pheidias

In this painting of Zeus, the god of the sky is sitting in his throne with a stern look on his face. His left arm is resting on a cloud, which I find very clever. His right arm is holding the royal scepter seen in the statue in Olympia, and Thetis is kneeling as if she were begging for something. When I first searched up this image, the first few words that passed through my mind were, “What is Thetis doing?” This painting brought up many other questions, and I was fascinated by the painter’s skill as well. I chose this painting because it surprised me how artists from just two hundred years ago knew about the gods and could paint them so accurately! Someday, I would like to learn the story of what Thetis had done wrong that made her kneel before Zeus. Thetis Appeals to Zeus, 1811, by the French painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
