The Story of Language Teaching / The Story of Technology in Language Teaching

People have always learned languages throughout history

Early formal language learning was often the “grammar translation” approach. It was used sometimes for the sole purpose of translating foreign correspondences.

What are the benefits and disadvantages of this approach? How might technology be used effectively here?

The Americans used the “oral- lingual approach during World War II for its military needs. Are these methods still used today?

Afterwards, interestingly enough, this method became popular among many tourists who wanted to travel.

The Council of Europe promoted a somewhat new idea: Communicative Language Teaching

This idea became popular, but it was not without its critics. How might technology be used within this strategy?

There are more contemporary ideas about how language should be taught and how technology should, if ever, be used.

What are your thoughts? E.g. What will language learning look like in the future? Thank you! Are there any questions?
