P09203 – 1kg Robotic Motor Module Gen 2 Platform This project is Sponsored by the Kate Gleason Foundation.  Team Members:  Lauren Farnsworth → Team Lead, DFMA, Process Design Expert  Mike Egan → Chief Engineer, Systems Engineering Expert  Matt Missel → Design Engineer, Machining & Assembly Expert  Greg Leaper → Systems Analysis and Website Administrator 2

Mechanical Overview 3

Project Description  Provide a product line of off-the-shelf motor modules and platforms for diverse applications  Scalable, modular, robust wheeled platform to carry payloads of 1kg mass  Module should be fully compatible with team P09204  Open architecture, Open source development  Target audience is educational and outreach programs 4

Customer Needs  Robust  Modular (High-tech Lego)  Infinite effective motion  High overall system efficiency  Open source and open architecture  Thorough Documentation 5

Design Rationale  Customer needs Identify what the customer really wants  Specifications Translate customer needs into engineering specifications  Concept generation Sketch approximately 20 concepts have the potential to meet customer needs and specifications  Concept selection Weight pros, cons, and risks of each concept  Detailed design 6

System Testing Plan  Drive System: Test drive system to ensure that it can move the module and payload.  Steer System: Test steer system to ensure that it can rotate the drive system under load.  Structure: Ensure structure remains in tact under normal conditions. 10

Cost Breakdown Prototype Cost (2 Motor Modules) Estimated Idler Cost (2 Idler Modules) $ $ Total: Lot of One Motor Module – $ Lot of Ten Motor Modules – $ Lot of One Idler Modules – $ Lot of Ten Idler Modules – $ Mechanical Components for one robot: ~$ Mechanical Components for ten robots: ~$ Electrical Cost Breakdown $ Total: Mechanical and Electrical components for one robot ~$ Mechanical and Electrical components for ten robots ~$

High Risk Assessment  Risk: Drive/Steer systems fail their basic functions during testing. Drive system is unable to move the module and platform. Steer system is unable to rotate the drive module and steer vehicle.  Solution: Replace motors based on data collected during testing 12

Next Steps  Research motor wires  Order all parts  Test Plan – Formal Draft  Update all Documentation  Set up a Preliminary Construction Plan  Final Design by First Week of Spring Quarter 13
